On the desktop, double click on Computer, then C:, then Program Files, then
scroll down the list to Windows Mail and double click on it. If the
resulting
list includes WinMail.exe, right click on it; otherwise find WinMail and
right
click on it. Click on Create Shortcut, then approve putting the shortcut on
the desktop. Close the window you created.

Now, you start Windows Mail by double clicking on the shortcut this created,
instead of starting it through Internet Explorer.
