Hi Chris,
Microsoft and Conexant are not to blame, it is the HP techs who have not bothered to help you or write working driver software...HP is the only one who can sort your mic issue out because its a laptop with a customized HP chip controlling the Mic input and they are the only ones who have access to the propriety sourcecode, Get the employee number of each tech you speak with at the beginning of the call and then after a few calls if they dont help, start making complaints about each tech and about the sloppy service...
If your still under warranty they are obligated to support your laptop and they can get in serious trouble for not solving that issue because you paid for "working" hardware and if HP will not make proper audio drivers allowing the hardware to be used they can be sued, if all else fails try get a refund if possible and dont buy HP
