I'm not familiar with Defender Pro. The only way to rule it out as the
culprit is to uninstall it, then try Windows Mail. If no improvement,
you can always reinstall it.
Another option (instead of uninstalling your antivirus) is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of
aggressive antivirus products:
