I had this problem. I did not find the cause, but I find a work around.
At the begin of Vista usage it works. Then, I suppoused the problem was
from some installed program. If you do not start messeger with windows
and wait boot to complete and then start messenger, it works.
Then I beleave it need some module pre-loaded and this module was not
loaded when I set it to start with Windows now. Probabily due increased
number of programs starting with windows, making initial load slow.
If you say that starting by hand is not a good solution, there are some
utility to delay start - see one at
www.r2.com..au - to do that.
It make messeger to work and make boot more usable. Longer, but the
machine became usable quickly due enqueeing of startup keep resource
free to you start using.
