OK I fixed this by going to the properties of the network connection and
checking the box against Virtual Network driver.
Now when I fire up the VM I get this:

The network adapter with address "00:00:00:00:00:00" of virtual machine
"Windows XP" failed to initialize because the address is a null address.

How do I fix this?
