Are you in a 'saved state situation", if so change display properties to
32 bit and accept, and shut down the VM. Boot the VM and it may have
'taken' -- it did for me with Vista. (That was the only OS where I had
that problem)

Screen resolution:

With the machine in 'not running' state. Click Settings>Display>Virtual
Machine Resizing Options. From the drop down box, choose 'Use guest
machine screen resolution'.

Boot the VM.

Change the display properties to your desired resolution.

Shut down.

Boot the VM. It should have taken now, it did with several machines for
me -- Win 2000 was the first, Vista was the last............
