Windows vista Home Premium 64-bit edition OEM

I wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista 64-bit for awhile because I want to be
able to add more memory to the system, I didn't care about any of the files
or settings so i wanted to do a clean installation. So I brough a 64-bit
Windows Vista Home Premium OEM and then selected the system BIOS to boot from
my CD-DVD optical drive, but when I inserted the disc it simply loaded files
like an upgrade disk and came up with a blank screen. So then I tryed to
upgrade from the 32-bit Windows XP home edition I have Installed, but it came
up with an error message saying this disk can't run on this version of
Windows. So I want to ask two questions, Firstly do how do I get the disk to
install the OS rather than just loading the files? And failing that how I can
getting running on the existing version of Windows I have installed?

Thanks
