Hi RuthF.
If you are signed into WLMessenger with your @live account, the icon in Messenger will still indicate to you when you have received e-mail in your @live account, which is in fact a Windows Live Hotmail account.
I think what you are saying is that you have not set up your @live (WLHotmail) account in WLMail. As such, you cannot access the e-mail in your @live account through WLMail even though WLMail is opened when you click on the e-mail icon in WLMessenger.
So to set up your @live account in WLMail, go to Tools->Accounts...->Add [button]->E-mail Account [select]->Next [button]->... Fill the appropriate fields with your @live account details then click the Next button, leaving the option to 'Manually configure server settings for e-mail account' *un-checked*.
Now you can use either the web interface or WLMail to access your WLHotmail (@live) account.
