And that's one of the best uses for virtualization, but there are
still some risks without locking LAN connections down too. Like if
you don't need file sharing on your host, turn it off or block it with
a firewall, things like that.

But the most important thing about your idea is that yes, it's a whole
lot safer. (but you still have to be careful)

Run an antivirus app in both the host and the guest....
