John, I installed ccleaner from Tone Arts and cleaned up the unnecessary
files
with the exception of browser cookies. In the past every time I cleaned up
browser cookies by other means, I couldn't log on to my bank's site.

Some folks here, including yourself, maybe, seem to think using a registry
cleaner is never necessary. Do you agree?

In windows 98SE, I used one regularly wuthout any problem.

Thanks for the help. anne
