Yes, Comcast is doing that. But I don't find it particularly
unfortunate.

No, that's not at all true. For the Microsoft newsgroups, I recommend
that you use the news server msnews.microsoft.com. For other
newsgroups, there are many other choices open to you. I'm a Comcast
customer too, and since I use text newsgroups only, I switched to the
free news server Motzarella. If you also want some binary newsgroups,
you may want to choose one of the paid-for news servers.

Just in case it's not clear to you, let me point out that almost all
newsreaders permit you to use multiple news-servers. I use Agent, and
I use six different news servers.

I'm with you entirely. Using the web interface is the slowest, most
error-prone, and least attractive way to participate in newsgroups. I
always recommend against it.
