I would give System Restore a try first. It would be a lot easier to do.

This tutorial will show you how to do a Repair (upgrade) install if System Restore does not help.

You can use Backup Status and Configuration to backup your file types, but it would be safer to manually copy, for example, your music or image files to the the backup media (ex: dvd).
