That can usually be solved by disabling the "multi-monitor" search Vista does on boot up.

To disable it, open up Task Scheduler (Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Task Scheduler) and on the left, you should have the Task Scheduler Library.

Click on the arrow to expand to Microsoft and continue expanding through to Windows>MobilePC.

You should have the TMM task (Transient Multi-Monitor Manager). Right click on it to disable and it should remove the black screen hangs on boot up.
