Without knowing the make/model of the laptop and knowing what graphics
chip/card it has it is not easy to answer your question.
Can you provide a link to the user's manual for your laptop?
It is not unusual for laptop graphics not to support extended desktop mode
due to the amount of graphics memory required and/or due to the amount of
additional power( and therefore heat generated) required.
