Hi flukezoid,

First things to check...

There are two types of audio in common use AC97 & HDA (high definition audio)
Check to see what type of audio your motherboard supports - It may be one or other or both.

Check what connections are on the front panel - more difficult to define but may be in specs from pc or case manufacturer. one way to check this is the physical connections if they have a 10 pin block it's HDA multiple connectors it's usually AC97 but not always

make sure that the two above match and the drivers in windows are for the correct type also.

also check any Bios options to enable jack sensing

after these initial checks I would also open the case and with the help of the motherboard manual ensure that all connections are made

It's a fair bit to check but hopefully it will be a simple connection issue ...
