I just ran through the Wizard for Windows Live Mail (12.0.1606). Even
specifying that the server requires SSL, the Wizard configured
'smtp.gmail.com' to use port 25.

I am reasonably certain that Gmail doesn't work with port 25. The server is
there, but they don't accept message submission connections. At least they
didn't the last time I tested. Gmail seems to be familiar with RFC 5321, but
Microsoft is still stuck in their own Internet fantasy world.
