Reinstalling the program won't give you that option since the program is not fully compatible with Vista 64. That's also why it could be doing the constant update requests.
I would suggest you find a suitable replacement like Kaspersky's
Internet Security 2009. It should work just fine. I use Kaspersky's Anti-Virus version 7 and it works like a champ.
