You can't find the setting because it doesn't exist in WLM.
If you were previously using the Office Outlook program, I believe that
program has such a setting.
If you don't want the next message to open, close the window before
deleting. Or if you are using the Reading pane you'll need to turn off
the Reading pane (View, Layout) or you can add a button to toggle the
reading pane off/on to the tool bar.
