I recently had similar troubles with updates. Your computer is set to update automatically. If you change this setting to just inform you that there are available updates, then when you view those available you can uncheck and/or check the updates you want to install at any one time.
Once I did that and now only update a handful at a time, I have not had any problems since. Also, I have found out quickly on this forum that other people periodically have problems with a patricular update so it is usually worth your while to investigate the individual updates before you install them. It could save you some headaches.
