I agree with Bob on both points.

Regarding the network setup, you do not need any settings on the host
side for a vm to use the NIC. All you need is the virtual switch network
protocol. See this article from Ben's blog.

Whether you use a synthetic or legacy NIC in the vm cannot possibly
affect how this works. You must have something else configured incorrectly
(or there is a problem with the NIC driver software on the host OS).
