| | Re: WPF not installed by default in Vista? I haven't seen one credible posting that says WinFX won't be pre-installed on Vista, infact I've only heard the opposite. I also don't believe that Vista internally makes use of WinFX for animation/etc., it seems unlikely that their flagship OS would make extensive use of a product still in development. If you would like to catch up on some reading, feel free to take a look at these blog posts... http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2...18/514615.aspx (just go from there, Tim has a listing of a ton of other blogs all with pertinent info) ....can't immediately find the others, but I wouldn't be too worried about it, as the latest drop of Vista works great with WinFX, and to add/remove it you have to use the Add/Remove Windows Components instead of the normal add/remove programs. |

| | Re: WPF not installed by default in Vista? ....not sure about the non-reply location...ie7 ftw.... Just to clarify a bit, what I meant by that, is that from what i've heard, it will be similar to the .NET framework, and IIS, meaning it's an option, I think it shouldn't be, but I think forces of communism will make it that way. Only real problem is that the Vista install process is so damned simplistic that it wouldn't make sense to stick it in there... | | Re: WPF not installed by default in Vista? When I was up at MS last week the people I spoke with at MS (WPF Ink) said that WPF was currently slated to be an optional component, not installed by default, but they were still hoping to get it installed. Apparently part of the issue is that WCF is installed at the same time as WPF and has a much larger security surface than WPF. The WPF like effects from Vista are to my knowledge and from comments made last week done using PresentationCore.dll directly. They go in directly to the native code rather than going through the managed code parts. I do not believe those interfaces are being made public however. | | Re: WPF not installed by default in Vista? My understanding is that the PresentationCore API is far lower level than WPF. The WPF architecture has all the styling, templates, controls, etc in managed code. At the lowest level the visuals are converted to render objects that are thrown over the wall to the render thread. I believe (but do not know for sure) that the PresentationCore API is at this lower level render object level, more like DirectX than WPF. I do not know if it is retained or immediate mode.
