November WinFX CTP) and WMP 10. I can reproduce this crash every time
on my XP SP2 Pro laptop, while my desktop (which has ostensibly the
same installed programs, except for being XP SP2 Home) runs without a
hitch.

I don't know if this could be relevant, but I ran depends.exe on both
boxes, and did find a slightly newer version of msgina.dll on the
broken laptop (5.1.2600.2603) vs. 5.1.2600.2180 on the working
desktop. This may be due to the difference between XP Pro and Home?

Any suggestions for what could be causing this, would be appreciated.

This may be due to outdated video card drivers, or a video card that does
not support hardware acceleration. Oddly enough, in the November CTP, you
need a hardware-acceleration-capable (DXVA to be more specific) *video* card
to be able to play even audio. This will be fixed in later versions. What
kind of video card are you running on?

Huge discovery there, thanks a lot. And of course overwriting with the
"good" DLL worked.

Now, as you say in your link above, the real question is how we each
ended up with this bunk DLL, that has the same version stamp as the
good one, but it clearly a different file.

Ed and Robert, do you have suggestions for how developers should
address this issue? In my case, my company wants to distribute this
WinFX application to end users. One, admittedly ugly, possibility is
to check for this bunk DLL via the filesize, and maybe ship the correct
one with our install. But there must be better options.

This ALMOST worked for me. I deleted my dxva2.dll, repaired my winfx
installation and now media elements dont CRASH. However, they also don't
display Anything at all. I did a debug and uppon catching the mediafailed
event, it reports,
"An unknown media error has occurred"

Any Ideas?
