General question about using Avalon...

I am about to begin developing a .Net app that will make heavy use of GDI+
to do some CAD-like functionality. It occurred to me that it might be a
good idea to write this app using Avalon (though, at this point, I know next
to nothing about Avalon). I thought that if I did this, I could learn
Avalon, take advantage of its advanced features, and end up with an app that
was a huge step ahead of a GDI+ app.

Does this thinking make sense? Is it possible to develop for Avalon today
in Windows XP if I load up the Winfx beta? If so, I was wondering if
someone might point me in the right direction for getting started in
learning Avalon.

Thanks!!

RE: General question about using Avalon...

About "getting started in learning Avalon":
We are creating a site about WPF 3D. This site has available now a complete
"tutorials serie" about 3D game creation using WPF. It's not a basic
"course". But we are beginning a new "tutorials serie" that is very very
basic, trying to teach not only WPF but .NET and C#. From the "Hello
world!". Only 5 lessons until now but many others soon.
All free, no ads, no registration needed.
Enjoy at:

RE: General question about using Avalon...

Craig - it is certainly possible to develop Avalon (now called WPF) apps
today on XP. The steps for doing so with the latest released bits are here
(along with some answers to typically asked questions)
http://blogs.msdn.com/tomarcher/arch...18/494506.aspx

As far as getting to know WPF, there are some hands-on labs here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvis...n/default.aspx,
also the WinFX SDK contains a large number of samples demonstrating various
things. There were some interesting WPF-related videos at the PDC this year
in the presentation track that you can watch or download from here

Re: General question about using Avalon...

I picked up a copy of Chris Sells' book, "Windows Presentation Foundation."
Looks like a great intro to Avalon.
