suddenly have public network and no net access....

Just recently, when I boot up cold, I have no net access. When I look at network and sharing center, I have listed a private and public network. The public network is new. If I click on view status for the public network and disable it, both networks disapear from the list. I then tell system to repair and the private network comes back on and all is well.

Why is a public network suddenly showing up and how do I stop this from happening?

By the way, once I get rid of the public network and reboot the public network does not show up again, but will show up again on a cold reboot, ie, shut system down, restart, and it's there.

Also, this morning, after going through all of this, I noticed the network notification icon in the taskbar now has a little blue thingie in it's lower right hand corner and I can't for the life of me figure out what that is/what it means.

All help welcome! I am running vista ultimate 64 bit on a desktop PC. No wireless on this PC, though the router is wireless.

Thanks!

Hello nelsonsdavis and welcome to VistaX64!

Can you provide a screenshot of your Network and Sharing Center? It should make it easyier to see whats going on and give you a better idea how to fix it also the blue thingy over the network icon shows you your local network internet status.

Hey DMEX, I am having trouble pasting here. What's the procedure? I'm attaching a jpeg of the screen shot for now.

Hey nelsonsdavis,

You attached the picture to the post correctly but the links need a web address to load the picture from like ImageShack® - Image Hosting , not your hard-drive

Im quite puzzled looking at this...Im trying to think what part of the system could cause the two profiles to be used on the one network adapter...The only thing that comes to mind is Windows Firewall with Advanced Security but im just not sure...

Instead of asking 1001 questions about your system are you able to upload a report from Belarc advisor since you allready have it installed?

My Computer

Hey, I"m not using windows firewall, am using COMODO. I'm leary to post Belarc since it will expose all my software licenses to the world. Again, this only happens on a cold boot, when I turn on in the morning. I can disable that pesty extra network, warm reboot to my hearts content, and it never again shows up - until I turn PC on in the morning for the first time.

My Computer

Hey nelsonsdavis,

The Windows Firewall Service/Driver is still used by the system even if your using a 3rd paty product...I was aware your licence would be exposed I thought you would edit it out before posting it or I would have had to edit it for you... If you can edit the belarc html file in word or similar and remove the keys that would be very useful since I dont have the time to spare asking a million questions (its 2am here need sleep sometime)

Thanks

Hey dmex, kind of a thought but more of a question all at the same time. He said he was using a wireless router. Is it possible one of his neighbors is picking up his signal? I have a wireless as does my across the street neighbor. (Mine is in the basement where I have metal bar joists that can hamper the signal). Anyways, when my wife is upstairs working on her laptop, she picked HIS signal up a couple of times instead of ours by mistake. Could that be causing his "dual network?" He is the private one since he is hard wired to the router, yet the router is still sending the wireless signal whether or not HE is receiving it. So if at anytime someone with a network card that receive his signal logs on suddenly he is providing a public network as well isn't he? Unless of course he has his router signal encrypted or is password protected the right term? Anyways, I know I never bothered to secure my "net". Part laziness and part ignorance. Ignorance in that I don't know how and laziness in that I haven't bothered to learn. Is my scenario possible or am i still just as my tag says a clueless newbie lol?

DIMEX, I saw that the Belarc advisor upload looked "funny". So, I am attaching it instead. It's a doc file.

Thanks. BTW, I use security on my wireless router and regularly check it to see the ip addresses assigned to devices to make sure no one is hacking me.

DIMEX, btw, this issue of having a private and PUBLIC network showing up is new, ie, the system was only showing, as it should be, the private network. The public network showing up just started happening this week. I've had this system up and running for about 2 weeks now. The only thing I have done new is to plug in a multi card usb reader. But I disconnected it, did a cold reboot and made no difference (which is should not have anyway). And again, if I do a warm reboot (don't turn off power), the issue disapears. The two networks only appear on a cold boot up.

My Computer

DIMEX, problem seems to be solved. Comments you or others made about vista firewall never really being off even if I turn it off. I went into WP.MSC and turned off vista firewall for the domain, Private and Public profile, and the problem went away. BUT, still don't know why in the overview it mentions not only domain and private profile, but also public profile.

I guess having vista firewall AND Comodo firewall both running was creating problems (?). Though not really sure of that, because Comodo had been running for about a week, and this issue only cropped up maybe 3 or 4 days ago.

So, with this new info, can anyone explain exactly what was happening?

Thanks!

My Computer

Sorry for the late reply...Im out on the road atm

I knew the profiles where a relation to the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security but I do not know why Comodo was causing the conflict I guess thats a question for them...

The 3 profiles are listed because you can edit the zones to your specific needs or usage, Domain is only used when the computer is joined into a Domain network while public/private are used for the consumer.

IV4 1V6

it's screwy with vista with xp DHCP it's supposto be automaticly
you re set it for Private it it should be on.
if you're at home off Private Office coffee show airport Public.

unplug your're Router four at lease 1 to 2 mins the 10 sec doesn't always work haveing the same problem now and then .

My Computer

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security does the profile settings, you can update comodo or change the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security profile settings found in administrative tools and disable it completely and it will stop it from happening again.
