connected to network, but not internet

Hey everyone,

I have found a great deal of help from looking on these forums before but this time I couldn't find the same problem, so I thought I would ask.

I'm having problems with my home network. I find that I will be on the internet wirelessly with no problems, then all of a sudden I lose internet connection, but I still remain connected to the home network. I have tried disconnecting and re-connecting to the network, this usually doesn't help. Occasionally that will help, but then a couple minutes later, I have the same problem. I have tried running the diagnosis within the Network and Sharing Center. Sometimes it will tell me that it doesn't detect a problem and sometimes it will detect a problem. Then I try to reset the wireless adapter "Wireless Network Connection" and it will appear to have fixed it, and when I try to re-load the page it times out and then I lose internet connection again. The only thing that I have found that fixes the problem is to recycle power to the modem. (Pain in the ass!)

The modem is connected to a desktop computer (I don't remember what it's running, but I know it's a version of XP) and there are multiple laptops within the house that connect to it wirelessly and I'm the only one running Vista and the only one having problems. The modem isn't very old, so I'm not thinking that it's the modem, so because I'm the only one having problems, I'm assuming it's a Vista thing.

Anyone have any ideas?!

Thanks,

Emily Anttila

I think this problem has been resolved with SP1.
Check if you have a network bridge.
When the problem occurs, check if your laptop/PC is receiving any IP settings (run/cmd/ipconfig /all)

My Computer

The problem is not resolved in SP1.

I have exactly the same problem. All other computers has no problem using internet when my computer can't connect to internet, but i'm still connected to the network.

I can transfer files to and from other computers while the internet work inproperly for me.

Try manually setting the IP, subnet, default gateway and DNS address to the exact same setting you get from DHCP for the connection since Vista can sometimes have a memory lapse and waits for a new request before allowing you to access the internet again...

I have had these same issues with wifi under vista but its not always its fault, wireless can have hundreds of issues....

Try changing channels because interference from microwaves, cordless phones and millions of other devices around your house can cause the dropouts because they all use the same channels, moving the transmitter/router for better coverage in some parts of the house and changing the type of Security used can help....It just denepnds on your hardware and the amount of junk in the airwaves in/around your house though.

My Computer

I have no kind of bridges and i have disabeld all other network connections. I just runned "ipconfig /all", what should happen except that ther is comming a list over all network connections?

My network connection is wirebounded, not wireless.

DISABLE DHCP and use these settings instead and let me know if theres any difference but like I said Vista will sometimes forget the details and re-obtain the IP leaving you with no internet while this happens and thats why you should try using manual instead of DHCP (automatic).

My Computer

There will be no internat at all if i set the DHCP settings manually(i have tried).

The problem has just disappear without explanation.
I just tested to set the DHCP settings manually, but the connection didn't work as good as it do with automatic DHCP settings.

This problem will come back, it's just a question about when.

Not sure why its worse using manual config, your just telling vista to use the same settings DHCP does...

Do you download torrents or use P2P?

My Computer

Yes and no ;)
This connectivity problem can be effectively resolved this way (i proposed this solution many times on different forums) but the fact is that we should find why this problem occurs so that an eventual update can fix it.
It happens to a lot of people through the whole word, with all the possible ISP, any kind of routers, etc.... So it is almost sure that this is a Vista problem but Why?
I personally had this problem once on 2 computers at the same time on the network, Writing the DNS (from my ISP) resolved the problem (i am not using a proxy) when the ISP uses a proxy, writing the 4.2.2.2 dns resolves the problem in many cases but not all.
This problem occurs mostly when using a wireless connection and maybe it could come from a misunderstanding by Vista of the security transaction between the router and the computer.
I, for example, reconfigured (on a system having the error) the wireless configuration with no security..... And the problem was solved. Of course you can't tell anybody to run wireless without a minimum of security.
So If security is wep 128 bits, trying to setup to 64 bits could be an issue but 64 bits really means 40 bits (24 bits for initialization).
WPA, same problem and i don't talk about the other protocols as they are used only by very few routers and network cards, and no talking too about the vista compatibility.
So, more security = more connectivity problems..... That could be a start to find a reliable solution, but we have to prove that less security means no connectivity problem.
Adding the fact that in some cases DNS resolve the case, adding the fact that the problem may come after few months, etc........ We are in a bad position and therefore propose solutions which may work for some units and may not work for some others.
Receiving a feedback is essential, unfotunately in most cases in any forums you receive the feedback of perhaps 5 to 10 % (optimistic) including those who only read and go.

Anyway, many thanks for your very useful comments.

Sid.

For me you comment that it seems to be a problem with a wireless connection make no sense, but some sense at the same time. I have 4 pcs on the network, 2 with vista. A laptop with vista 32 via wireless and a desktop with Vista 64 via a wired connection. THe desktop PC is the one with the problem. The fix suggest but putting in the DNS does not seem to fix the problem for me :(.

However this problem did seem to occur after I changes the router from using WEP to WPA.

Im in the UK, and the router I am using is the BT Home Hub, believe it is made by Thompson, but I couldnt tell you the model. I'm going to go switch the router back to WEP to see if that resolves the issue for me.

Hold the phone. After using the DNS fix suggested else where and acutally rebooting the system has worked for the first time on reboot. Fingers crossed this is a work around. I will be rebooting several times over the next few days, so I will keep you all informed.

This is an anoying problem, so I am keen to help in anyway possible to get the route cause identified.

Regards.

My Computer

Nope, thats not worked. Thought I'd give it a reboot before I went to bed, and the same old problem occured. I think it does have something to do with the gateway assigned to be 0.0.0.0 because when ever it fixes itself the true IP is assgined.

Is there any infomation I can produce for your technical people to try and identify the problem?

Just found another way that appeared to solve it.

Accessed the command prompt in adminstrator mode.
Ran route -f.
Cleared the gateway assigning.
Asked windows to repair the network connection.
Fixed the problem.

My Computer

Good morning all.

My work around (see above) appears to be fixing the problem for me everytime now. However it is odd that this problem occurs. Can the others advise if this solves the problem for them?

Still would like to get the the route cause of the problemm (Pun intended :) )
