Chances are you had some thrid-party utility installed on XP that provided this functionality, as spell-check is not a standard part of Internet Explorer or even Firefox.

You'll have to determine which add-on did this, and then find and install a Vista compatible version.

Spell-check IS a standard feature with Firefox!

I stand corrected. I only use Firefox when checking compatibility with websites that I design. My everyday browser (since switching to Vista nearly 18 months ago) has been Internet Explorer 7.0

Understandable, since it only shows up when you're typing a message!

Hi Jbt,

Firefox 3 has spellcheck builtin, for Internet exploerer use IE7Pro for highlighting/spellchecking and more ;)

My Computer

According to IE Properties I'm running just plain Internet Explorer.

Many of my fav (and paid for) programs won't work on Vista. I'm sick of vista! Carbonite backup of old computer isn't working well (yet) because of so many incompatibilities. What I would give to have my old XP Pro MCE running again. Much of my computer time is with photography and movie clips. My fav Adobe PhotoDeluxe 3.1 won't work. Capture Express ditto. Photoshop 5.5 & 6 work only partially.

I hope there is some way I can get rid of Vista. $900 for an HP Pavillion and so far all I do is pound my head on it.

Right, let's get started:
  1. Carbonite - I just had a look at their website. They don't have a "Trial Download" section, neither do they have any kind of "Support" system available where you can post questions or download updates. That has the alarm bells ringing in my ears as not being a 100% kosher application to begin with.
  2. Adobe PhotoDeluxe 3.1 - Have you checked Adobe for updates?
  3. Photoshop - Check here for updates - Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Windows
  4. Capture Express - They don't mention Vista compatibility at all (Capture Express Home Page). And because utilities such as this one usually require direct access to the display driver and hardware, the chances of it working properly on Vista without an update are minimal. Have you tried using the Windows Snipping Tool as an alternative, or the old-fashioned method of just pressing the <PRINT_SCREEN> key?
The best way to solve compatibility problems with software on Vista is to check manufaturers websites for updates. Failing that, you can try to run the probgrams in compatibility mode.

Wow, talk about quick replies!

Carbonite can be tried for free for 30 days (don't even need credit card) using offer code Laura. I can't personally recommend yet and am giving them a chance still.

I did have to dl a new plugin for PhotoDeluxe 3, but when tried to reinstall got a popup saying not enough memory to do the deed. That's when I discovered CaptureExpress wouldn't work when tried to take a screenshot of the popup and Windows Task Manager. Total Physical Memory was 3964 MB with 1800 cached and 1167 free. (yeah, I know doesn't add up)

Doing my photo editing at this very moment on an old Gateway running Win 98SE.

None of the Photoshop help files would display in Vista.

Thanks again!

Are the Photoshop help files in ".HLP" format? If yes, then try this - Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista

Vista stopped supporting ".HLP" files, but the WINHLP32.EXE file is available for download for those older programs that insist on using it...

Just installed the ieSpell & rebooted. Works just like I want. Thanks!

The help files were Windows Help File format.

Capture Express I really, really miss because you could quickly outline a just small area to capture, capture a window, the whole screen etc, etc. So easy to use. Unfortunately not for Vista. What's New in v 2.0

Only so much time each morning to work on these things. I have PhotoDeluxe 3 on a 3rd computer. Is there an easy way to hook the two computers together so can share info back and forth. It's an old Gateway with Win98se. I could put the two towers abt 10 foot away from each other.

Thanks again!
