nothing is working except IE 64

I've had this problem quite a few times with Vista 64 now and some of my friends did as well. IE 32bit or any other browser will not work. windows live messenger, video games etc, nothing works except for IE 64bit. restoring to the last windows update always fixed it but now Im facing a new situation. I installed a new version of Vista Ultimate x64, this time with SP1 from the start and I had this problem from the very begining so I can't really use system restore.

tried reinstalling, googled for hours, searched this forums for a few more hours and I couldn't find anything for this specific problem.

tried to Reset IE, reinstall IE, /renew and /release ipconfig as admin, nothing works. help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

I really didn't do anything special on this install, just a clean Ultimate x64 SP1 install on a formated HD. I use the onboard network card originally with the drivers from CD then with the drivers from the manufacturer's site, either way was the same.

as a sidenote, whenever I close IE32 it gives me a 'Internet Exlorer has stopped working' message

Hmmm. It sounds like SP1 is hosing you every time. But that is weird.

I have no issues with x64 with or without SP1.

have you tried to uninstall and then reinstall the drivers *after* installing SP1? (You'll want to reboot between the uninstall and reinstall)

I should have said that I had this problem on two different setup. the old one was an old Athlon XP 3800+ with Vista Ultimate x64 but I had to install SP1 separately and I did try what you suggested. it would work but stop working again after a while, then system restore would help me out.

now this is a whole new machine. first install on this one, ever. whole new windows as well since this one is SP1 from the start. should I still try to remove SP1?

Did you manually upgrade to SP1? If so, uninstall it and see if it works if it does, uninstall the driver, reboot, install SP1, then install the driver last.

OK, Next question then - are you using a modified version (such as a vLite created DVD) to install Vista? If not, are you perchance using an MSN Checked and Debug build?

ok after all it was related to my antivirus (nod32) which indeed messed up my winsock. uninstalled it, fixed winsock, reinstalled it and now it works. thanks for all the help, much appreciated :)
