IE7 pegging CPU monitor

Not sure if this belongs here or in the gaming forum or what, so forgive me if I've posted in the wrong forum. Very recently IE7 has begun using between 44% and 55% of my CPU usage, often pegging it at 100% when playing games on Pogo. I've figured out that it is when Java is enabled that this occurs. I tried downloading, installing and using Mozilla Firefox to see if that would resolve the issue but the same thing occured as soon as I loaded a game window.

This causes my game to run choppy and slow and sometimes hang for up to 10 seconds at a time as my computer chokes on whatever is going on. I've been playing on Pogo since 2003 on a daily basis and this has never occured until about a week ago. Bringing up Task manager shows that iexplorer.exe is the file that is using up such a massive amount of my CPU. I can resize my browser window and watch my CPU monitor (looks like an RPM gauge in a car) on Windows sidebar stay consistently between 70% to 100% when I have a game window open. These are not RPG games that I am playing, these are solitaire card like games, casino type games, puzzle and word games, etc.

I have updated all the definition files and ran full scans using Adaware 2008, SpyBot S&D, and McKafee AV (I have and run the internet security suite). My firewall is on and as an additonal note I have noticed this has occured sometime since I got a wireless Linksys router and moved my desktop into my bedroom (I have a wireless PCI adapter card) about 2 weeks ago.

Although at first I had the same problem with that audiodg.exe file and would have to disable it then the games would play fine. I finally uninstalled or disabled something that had to do with my enhanced sound driver (can't remember exactly what now, sorry!) and HP update went ahead and redownloaded and installed it again for me. Shortly thereafter while trying to watch a DVD in which the sound refused to play (after rebooting so that audiodg.exe would be running again) while messing with my sound settings Windows suddenly announced that some feature of my enhanced audio was causing issues and that it was going to disable some portion of it. After it did that the sound worked fine but I no longer had my equalizer and sound effects, etc. that used to be there in my system tray.

Anyhow, after that Audiodg.exe gave me no further problems and no longer uses anymore than 1% of my CPU and only on occasion when playing these games. However, it seems that just after windows disabled that enhanced audio feature is when the problems started again and I was rather confused to see that instead of the old culprit, it was now iexplorer.exe that was gobbling up all sorts of CPU resources. By the way I always have the sound turned off in the games option windows anyhow if that helps at all.

I did set up a secure wireless connection that is password protected with the wireless router. This CPU usage by IE7 did not happen when the computer was hardwired, however, I'm not sure if a recent java update or the wireless connection, or windows disabling some of my enhanced audio features is to blame. I did not figure out what was causing this CPU drain until two days ago and have been fiddling with it ever since trying to resolve the problem as well as scouring the net for any hints to no avail. When I turn off the java control console the CPU usage goes down to below 10%, however then I cannot play any games!!

I am at a total loss here. Is there any known issues between the newest versions or updates of Java and massive CPU usage or does it sound like my computer has been hijacked and when I enable java some malicious script or program is running silently in the background sending out spam or something unbeknownst to me?? I'm grasping at straws at this point. Help!!

I have owned this computer since February 2007 and being on disability I spend a lot of time on Pogo to pass the time and have never had issues like this at all. This is not the first wireless connection I have had. I've moved three times this year and have had this computer on a total of three different wireless connections besides this one in the past year. One was through a wireless DSL modem, one was through a wireless router using a cable modem ISP, and another was through a Belkin wireless router using a Satellite ISP (Hughes satellite). I am currently on Wildblue if that makes any difference at all. In all instances I had NO problems with IE7 pegging my CPU to it's limits while playing Pogo.

I have filled out my computer specs in my profile but if need be I can post the information here if that helps. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions anybody can offer!!

It's Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 7 version wise

Thanks, I tried it (even though I knew I had the latest update already) I uninstalled my current version anyhow, downloaded it again from your link and reinstalled it. It didn't work.

Playing Pogo right now and the CPU gauge is running between 83% and 100%

Weird thing is, that at first it DID seem to work. I was playing Pogo this morning before I had some running around to do and the gauge stayed between 23% and 55% but not anymore. Now it's back to doing what it did before. I am at wits end here. Any other ideas? I'm desperate at this point! :( I've also emptied my browser cache just in case and am totally out of ideas here. Sigh....

Try to install java virtual machine & then try to play the game. And check if that makes any difference.

I went to the Java site again and while I saw references to both JRE and JVM when clicking the downloads link the only option I got was to ensure that I had the proper version of Java installed. This lead me to the help menu which had a section for problems with Pogo which prompted me to check Pogos help file which in turn lead me to a nifty program they have to help you resolve problems. With the programs help I once again dumped my browser cache and also dumped my java cache and a few other things. So far things are a bit better. After a reboot my CPU monitor is running between 35% and spiking only as high as 65% while playing Pogo. While this is still much higher than it ever has before in the past it is an improvement. Whether or not the...... never mind. My CPU monitor just spiked to 100% again. Now I am running between 55% and 85% and it appears it just keeps getting higher each time with the bottom going up as time goes on. Geezus.... this is a nightmare.

I have downloaded the latest Windows update and am about to shut everything down to install Vista SP1 so we'll see if that makes any difference. I'm seriously getting frustrated here. I am starting to believe now that my recent Java upgrade is the culprit. Java had upgraded right about the time my CPU started spiking so high and staying spiked while playing on Pogo. Is there a way to uninstall the latest Java update and go back to the previous version? Perhaps my system configuration doesn't care for the latest Java upgrade?

I will wait until SP1 is installed and see what occurs after that. Hopefully it will solve more issues than it creates....

Wish me luck.

Well I installed SP1 and nothing has changed. I have no idea what to do next. Can someone explain to me how to get JVM? I thought that was what I had??? What is the difference between JRE and JVM? I'm confused!

Thank you, I will do a Google search for JVM now. It appears as if (according to the Wilkipedia definition) that JVM may indeed be quite helpful in this particular case. As an added note I went ahead and downloaded and installed the beta version of IE8 the other day in hopes it would help improve my situation. It did not. The jury is still out on what I think about IE8. So far the downside is that it crashes my browser everytime I close a game window powered by Java.

I'll get JVM installed and see if that helps. If not I'll try uninstalling the IE8 upgrade and see if JVM + IE7 is the right formula. So far I've found that rebooting every 6 hours or so helps for a while. However, soon enough my CPU is once again pegged at 100% and using Process Explorer shows me that IE runs between 45% and 55% of my CPU as long as I have a game window open if my computer has been running for more than 2 hours since its last shutdown or reboot. Close the game window and CPU usage drops to less than 10%

Here goes nothing....
