Facebook no longer works on my laptop!

Hi,

I have an advent laptop with vista ultimate operating system. (1 year old).

I no longer know what to do about facebook.....

Ok i never used to have any problems whatsoever.

I have Kaspersky security, however facebook used to work perfectly well. So it cant be that??

I have explorer 7. Again never used to have problems.
I have tried using other explorer versions, e.g. firefox, opera etc.
I did try to upgrade to explorer version 8, but for some reason this download would also not start.

I have checked all settings, ran explorer with add ons and no add ons.

I have no viruses etc. I run clean up and registry mechanic regularly.

I restart and defrag. Even tried system restore!

I just do not know what to do next....

I type in facebook.com and it takes forever to load the sign in page. When the page appears, the facebook logo is missing, and looks blank, i try and sign in as the boxes are available, but my home page will not load, or if it does (which it hasn't for well over a week now) again, the page has bits missing and you cant access anything!

I have also noticed from time to time yahoo wont load properly either (i have used the yahoo question and answer sections when searching for facebook help).

I can access all other sites!

From what i gather from numerous hours searching the net, others have the same issue. However i have friends with Vista who have no problems, my mum has XP and its fine, the same thing at work.

I have had this problem on and off for months, some days it was fine, other times it was not. But recently i cannot use it at all.

Does anyone have any ideas what the hell is wrong? I have tried everything!
Is it a facebook server issue? i thought if it was everyone would have the same issue on other operating systems!

Advice would be great!

Thanks :(

Try deleting the internet temp files in IE by going to tools internet options then click on the delete in browsing history and click on delete files button. If that doesn't work goto the advanced tab and click on the reset button.

I have no problem accessing facebook.com so its not a server issue.

Probably not the cause, but might be worth a check...

Have you looked at the hosts file? ( C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts ).

A 'standard' hosts file will only have one line (and a load of comment lines beginning with #), which is:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
This simply tells your browsers that http://localhost/ should go to the IP address 127.0.0.1, which happens to be your own computer. If you don't run a web server on your PC, then this will result in a 'The document contains no data' error.

Of course, if you have somehow got one of the facebook server addresses mapped to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file, you would be unable to access parts of Facebook. I cannot think of any way this could happen accidentally (except maybe the behaviour of a new virus or spyware, or a 'friend' messing about to confuse you), and I don't expect you to find it in there, but at least it would be another check you can tick off the list.

Have same problem, but on PC, have tried all of above, nothing works, but found if you put an "s" after the "http", (making it https://www.facebook.com/) it will work, but everytime you want to access any application you have to go back up and put the "s" after the "http" again. Any clues on fixing this?

This makes a secure link to Facebook. once you have entered it you could delete your old shortcut and make another with the s included.

I have to agree with the people that say don't use it.
Most virus infections come from sites like Facebook that people upload things to. Also all info you put there belongs to Facebook to do with what they like.

1. Click Start, click Accessories, the right click on Command Prompt and choose "run as administrator", then type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then hit enter.

2. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll then hit enter.

3. Now type exit and hit enter. Now try media player and it should work.

The "https" means that it is secure, something like google would be "http"...

Hope this helps you! :)

Cheers for the advice!! I've been trying to find a way to bring facebook back for a week, and the secure connection thing works!
Anybody got any ideas why it would make such a difference, and how I could use it to get the regular pages working and not have to keep prefixing with an 's' ?
