AutoComplete problem

A friend has a new e-mail address, and I have deleted the old one from my Windows Mail Contacts (Vista Business) and put in the new one as his preferred (and only) e-mail address. However, when I put in the first part of his name the AutoComplete comes up with the old address, despite various attempts to remove this.

Have tried deleting Temporary files, cookies, history, etc. and altering the AutoComplete settings, but nothing seems to work, even the suggestions from Microsoft phone help. Tried doing all these things then turning the computer off, to no avail.

Very annoying - anyone have any ideas? I'm not too good on these things - started too old!

Thanks,

Pete.

I tried to emulate your problem and failed!
But try this.
In Windows Explorer, scroll down to "Users" - "username", and open Contacts. Manually dlete the old entry, if it is there, and retry your procedure.

Whichever way I get to my Contacts (Windows Explorer or Windows Mail), the new address is there. But AutoComplete still comes up with the old one - got everyone tossed so far, especially me!

Hi PeterM, welcome to the board.
Have you try CCleaner. I believe it has an option you to check off auto complete. Hope this will help.

Gary,

Option Two, the manual delete, seems to be what I want. Only problem is, I am defeated at step 1! (Sorry, but this stuff doesn't come naturally to me due to the grey in my beard!) My Start Menu has a Search option but has 2 choices, search for files and search for people. Neither gives me the result you give in step 2. Am I even in the right place?

Thanks,

Pete.

Bruce 2, downloaded CCleaner but couldn't work out how to work it. As I mentioned above, I'm hopeless at all this - it just isn't instinctive as it seems to be when younger people have been brought up with computers. When I was young you had to do all your own programming and put these in the computer with punch cards!!! Just wasn't my cup of tea, even then.

Hello Peter,

You are using the classic start menu. Right click on the start menu button and choose properties. Select start menu, OK. This will give you the Vista start menu with a white search box at the bottom. Follow the tutorial and then you can switch it back if you wish.

Gary,

Must be something wrong with my software. When I select Start Menu and click on OK, I get absolutely nothing! See what I mean, I'm a hopeless case!

Pete.

Hi Peter,

IMHO no one is hopeless. I remember when I felt pretty hopeless. It all comes with desire and time.

Did you 'Right' click on the start button. You should get a menu with 'properties' third from the bottom. Click on that. You can also get to this window by Right clicking on a blank space on the taskbar and selecting 'properties'. Then selecting the Start Menu tab at the top. You should then see this window.

You should then see that you have 'Classic Start menu' selected. Click on the dot next to 'Start menu' then click on the OK button at the bottom of the window. That should give you the Vista start menu with the white search bar at the bottom. You can then follow the tutorial.

I have plenty of gray in my beard too. ;)

Please keep us posted.

Gary

Edit: When you do the tutorial be sure to export the key. To do this 'Right click' on the key and select Export. It will ask where you want to save it. Doesn't matter as long as you can find it again if necessary. That way if something goes wrong we can fix it.

Still doesn't work - when I hit OK after selecting Start Menu, I get nothing except the loss of the Internet Explorer Icon on my desktop!!! I think my software is faulty, and I am getting just a wee bit discouraged.

My Computer

I've also noticed that when I left click on the start button the menu displayed is different to the normal one! Mucking around before I ended up with a cascade of Internet Explorer windows that I couldn't stop except by turning the power off to the computer. You see I really am hopeless!

All I really want is for the AutoComplete to give me the updated e-mail address!

Remember you heard this here first: "The more snow there is on the roof, the dimmer it is in the attic!" One of my originals.

My Computer

I've returned my Start button menu to normal, IE icon restored to desktop, and, guess what? AutoComplete is now giving the new, correct e-mail address for this particular contact. Seems to have sorted itself, except that "Start Menu" gave me no menu and took the IE icon off the desktop when selected and OK pressed. Odd.

Argue for your limitations and you own them. (Not mine, but one of my favorites)

Very Odd. Never heard of such a thing. I don't have Vista Business, but the OS is the same as Premium just with some different add-ins.

Well as long as it's working.... :D

Sometimes the gnomes in that box will smile on you. ;)

Take care,
Gary
