I cannot download anything. everything looks to download correctly but the files are not to be found afterwards. the dialog box for "firefox downloads" has OPEN and OPEN CONTAINING FOLDER greyed out. last night i went into safe mode and ran avg, No virius found. went into IE and checked if downloads were disabled, they were not. I empied the private data in firefox, and ran disk clean up. even went as far as uninstalling firefox and checked the box to remove all user info (Lost all my bookmarks).
nothing I have read about this problem has worked. please help. I cant even get pdf files, programs, pics, mp3. nothing at all comes through.

Have you tried disabling/uninstalling AVG?

thanks SIW2. this question is still open to suggestion. I did not try uninstalling avg. I cant get/ don't have a copy to reinstall. and don't want to loose it. hope some one can help I really don't want to have to have my pc reformatted.

You could try disabling the AV temporarily. It's not a conclusive test but it's a start.

Also, does the same problem occur if you boot to [safe mode + net] and attempt to download stuff from there?

well I tried downloading in safe mode and the same thing happpens, there is a file name place holder in the destination folder until the download is complete and then it disappiers.
I turned off avg from the taskbar and then from the task manager. and that does not change any thing either. I'm stumped. I went through the links above and some people say that get downloads back but I havent had any luck with the routes they took.
can I have my hard drive reformatted at a shop and not have to buy a copy of vista? It came already installed on my lap top so I dont have the disks.

well A little progress was made. I just ran windows update and got IE8. downloads work there. so that is a plus but I still have the problem with firefox, and I'd rather use FF. but oh well I guess. I already reinstalled firefox and that did nothing. I still want to solve this if any has more input. If I figure it out I post the results here.
