Internet Explorer Problems

Hi, i really hope somebody can help me. As the thread title might suggest im having problems with internet explorer everytime i open it it saying "internet explorer has stopped working" and this happens straight away. Ill start from the beginin:

A few days ago i downloaded a torrent file via bit torrent. I was downloading a tv episode that was in .wmv format. I though i was downloading it from a user that i normally do (and therefore trust) but i now suspect it was a fake account/torrent. Anyway when i downloaded the torrent i opened the file and got asked to download what looked liked a codec (although i never actually read what i was downloading as it appeared to be a windows media player asking me to download it in order to play the file). Now please spare me the lecture i know i should be careful downloading files and always read what im downloading and normally im very careful i guess i was just having an off day.

Now since i did that very stupid thing internet explorer refuses to work. Everytime i try and open it up i just get the message internet explorer has stopped working, and the only opition i have is to close the program. Furthermore when i tried to install updates today out of 6 updates my laptop would only download 1 and fails everytime i try and do the other five. (error code 80244019)

i already had Chrome installed on my computor previous to this and thankfully that works, i also downloaded firefox through chrome (after internet explorer stoped working) but everytime i try and open it i get the following message:

"Firefox encountered a problem and crashed"

I have tried everything i can think of to try and fix the problem (although im by no means an expert). Additionally to what ive already mentioned i've tried the following:

• CCleaner, ive wiped all cookies and temp files etc
• I've tried to download internet explorer again but chrome wont let me install it
• spyware and virus swept, which came back clear

I think ive mentioned everything, and i apologise for any bad spelling or grammer.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

try to do system restore

I have attached firefox 3.0.10 & IE8

@Pacinitlay: That was the other thing i did (that i forgot until just you mentioned it just now) I tried doing a system restore to mutliply check points and they all failed. And thank you very much for attaching IE8 and firefox, ive just tried downloading the IE 8 but when it downloads it saves as a .download file and my laptop (or me for that matter) doesnt know how to deal with that, have i done somthing wrong?

OK ive tired downloading and installing both, im still getting the same message as before, Any other ideas?

Ive just rescanned for spyware and found and removed a trojan, im not sure if that relevant or not

check out the apps attached to see what programs are also running
end task for iexplore.exe [if it's running]
run hijack this and see if you have maleware too

since all your restore points are no good, delete them ( right click my computer choose properties, then advance sys settings on the left then sys protection and uncheck the C drive)


Restart your computer, and then try open Internet Explorer 8.
try to disable / delete addons in IE8
In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset. Follow any on-screen directions

more than that, I'm not well versed enough to advise any other options
aside from as many tech support dudes says.....

thanks ill try the above (although i ahve also tried running IE with add-ons disabled, that was the one bit of advise i did get from vistas help) and to add to the problems my laptop now wont back up to dvd either

reboot,

tap F8 and try to "go back to a time sys was working right" or something like that. I remember seeing that somewhere.

check out another app I attached and uninstall IE8.
when it scans the registry, only delete the bold reg items.

I can't even uninstall IE7 or IE8--see pics

No luck it looks like im prob gunna have to reinstall but im reluctant to do so cos i cant back up first, i wont lose everything but i will lose enough for it to take me a while to recover everything

ooo this looks promising...ive just open IE8 wihtout add-ons (after reinstalling it earlier) and its staying open...at least for now anyway...well thats possibliy one problem down...

ok problem not sovled, IE opens now (add-ons disabled only) but wont load any pages or anything like that

do you have an external drive?

try to offload as much as you can
