Both IE 8 and Firefox will not display pages.

For the past few weeks my IE browser and Firefox will stop working, not literally. Both browsers claim to have loaded the page, (says done) but shows only a white background. (The browsers do not say stopped working or no connection just refuse to display the page.) The only way get them to start showing again is to restart. It is not the internet connection. I can ping sites, check mail etc just cant view sites. I have racked my brain and I do not know what the problem is. My pc is clean, no viruses, I have tried system restore, and removed all updates for the past month. It is really driving me crazy for the first time in my life I am concidering a MAC. Someone tell me u kno whats goin on cause I don't. Does anyone know what files these programs have in commom?

Whats the latency on the ping's your sending out? How long does it take for a reply?

Ok, so its definitely not a latency issue. Lets try this, I have an idea. instead of typing google.com, lets type: 74.125.45.100 and tell me if google comes up.

I will try that if it happens again. I got so frustrated with it last night that I uninstalled IE8 and reverted back to 7. So far so good but I want 8 back. I may reinstall 8 and see if mabe a file was damaged or something. I keep this updated.

I recently reinstalled 8 and updates. Well it happened again tonight. On both IE 8 and 7. During the time of the issue latency was 108ms and both browsers will retrive sites via ip but not url. I considered the fact that it may be DNS. So I change them as a precaution, needless to say it wasn't the issue. I have pinpointed it to the Microsoft updates and I am currently in the process of narrowing down, to see which one it was. Ill update. If you have anything to add I would love to hear it.

Hi,

I had the same problem last week and I couldn't find a fix neither. (winxp machine) I asked some people on a dutch forum, but none of them had a fix for it. While I was googleling for this problem I found out that some other people with my problem where using Bitdefender.
I unistalled bitdefender 3 days ago and the problem disappeared.
Maybe you could post a Hijackthis log here, cause I'm thinking of one item that may cause the problem.
I hope you'll be able to fix the problem as soon as possible cause I know irritating it is :x

SOLVED! Thanks StoomStrijkijze. I don't have any clue what makes BitDefender cause this but uninsalling will fix the problem. All the time I never thought to check Defender. I did check the firewall settings and all other settings but nothing was unusual. I assume some background processes conflict somewhere. Im going to continue looking into the exact cause, because I would like my virus software back. I will update here if I find one.

The firewall may have been blocking those programs as the access the internet. But good find, I wouldn't have guessed, I should've known to ask that lol.

glad you got it up and running :)

I did reset the firewall of Bitdefender and nothing helped. The problem was still there. I also turned it off and still nothing.
I know there a was a background proces that was gone after bitdefender was removed and I read somewhere it was unnecessary.
This is the key I'm talking about, it's from an XP machine, but I guess the key would be almost the same in Vista:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

You check the background with Hijackthis (free program) and remove that item with the same program. Just check the item and press fix/delete.

I'm going for NOD32 I guess. It takes less resources than Bitdefender and it's still a good AV.

I have experianced the exact same problem, FF and IE stops displaying webpages but everything else works (mail, torrent, RSS etc etc). Both times was after an update and the only way I got FF and IE to work was to use the system restore feature. Vista64 said that the (this might be the wrong name for it I use Vista in swedish) Data Execution Protection something had blocked FF and IE due to something....I tried finding info on this but appart from a thread in a swedish forum I could not find any other information about this problem. As now I dont dare upgrading or patching Vista att all due to the fact that the last two updates has led to IE and FF refusing to display webpages.

Well a week ago the same started happening to me. However it seems to only happen if i'm watching any videos online.
Has anyone any other solution to this problem, other than uninstaling Bitdefender.
