Solved Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail accounts

What bad, bad,habit?
Vista Guru
Recently I installed an update for Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419), which came with a 'new look' version of Hotmail - Windows Live Mail 2011.

Since then I've had nothing but annoying issues with Hotmail, and it's settings and configurations. Issues which at times have caused parts of it to close down, and which have also created merry hell with the text of the emails.

First of all was this crazy warning message, which appeared each time I opened my Hotmail account:

Wlsettings exe.. Entry.JPG

A check of Problems Reports and Solutions showed that I was experiencing a major difficulty - an APPCRASH with Hotmail, but I didn't have a clue about how to fix it. This is the View of the Problem Details;

wlsettings failure 231010.JPG

After considering the problem and the impasse that I was faced with, I decided to do the following in an attempt to create a 'workaround' of the problem, and to hopefully resolve the issues I was having;

1. I did a System Restore, back to the Restore Point immediately before I had downloaded and installed the latest Windows Updates, including KB2434419 - Update for Windows Live Essentials 2011, of which Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] is only one part.

2. After the Restore Point had been confirmed and my Laptop restarted [Rebooted] I then confirmed with a search of Windows Update, that KB2434419 was ready to reinstall to the Laptop. The Update for Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] was successfully reinstalled.

This method seems to have fixed the APPCRASH issues described above, because the Hotmail accounts now open without any further warnings, program close-downs, or application crashes.

So, you'd think then that that should be the end of it, but it's not.

There are now some issues I am experiencing with what I believe are some of the default Settings and/or Filters in Hotmail. These are particularly annoying as they are making a mess of text that I type in the body of emails, where the main problem seems to hinge around the use of punctuation marks, used in the text.

The following are examples of what is happening with text prepared in writing emails:

OK....I will type text as an email that looks something like this before I send it;

I did my restore back to the 20th, then updated Windows with what was waiting in the queue. Then no ‘wlsettings.exe’ warning “GONG” at hotmail startup, so that’s fine. You’ll also see ma’am, that I’ve used as many “inverted commas”

But then when I check my 'Sent' Folder after the email has been despatched, I find that the text has become corrupted with 'alpha' symbols replacing all inverted commas that I used in the original text. This same error happens if the original text is returned back to me from an original addressee;

I did my restore back to the 20th, then updated Windows with what was waiting in the queue. Then no ‘wlsettings.exe’ warning “GONG†at hotmail startup, so that’s fine. You’ll also see ma’am, that I’ve used as many “inverted commasâ€

You can see that with the above text, ALL of the inverted commas used in the original message, have now been overwritten by 'alpha' symbols that have made the message barely readable.

In addition to this problem, if I want to look at individual emails in the 'Sent' Folder, each one is now headed with the following warning bar;

TEXT ERROR EXAMPLES 2.JPG

This is a ludicrous situation with an even crazier error because although I am clearly the originating Sender from the Hotmail account, the 'Sent' Folder is not recognising that fact, and I then need to click onto 'Allow sender' in order to open it, and maybe forward it on to another addressee.

A new Update, and it's a damned mess.

Re: Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail acco

I've downloaded the full Windows Live Essentials 2011 and Windows Live Mail is a totally separate application from my Hotmail account (at least it is for me). Although my Hotlook account looks a little different, it is essentially the same as it has always been with a few more options (when accessed through the Bing Toolbar which is how I do it). It does NOT open Windows Live Mail 2011. It goes instead to my online Hotline account which is perfectly fine.

Were you previously using a prior version of Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail as the client for your Hotmail account instead of just using the direct online version? Have you tried going to the online version of Hotmail and checking if things are mucked up there or if that's only in Windows Live Mail? I suspect the problem is with Windows Live Mail and not with Hotmail.

I hope this helps. Let me know, and we'll see what we can come up with to fix the problem. Maybe you should consider uninstalling the update and see if that fixes the problem (unless you think that cured the larger problem). In either case, then maybe the best thing to do would be to seek help in the Windows Live Mail Forums where they know a lot more about it than we do.

Good luck!

Re: Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail acco

Hello Lorien,

Thanks for getting back.

First of all, I'll just say that in all the time that I've had Windows Live Mail with two Hotmail accounts, this is the first time that I've struck any problems with either account, and that the problems that I have struck this time, have all the hallmarks of a direct co-relation to the most recent Update made to Windows Live Essentials 2011.

To help clarify things a little further, these are the email accounts that I have, and use;

 • Windows Mail [WM] - my first email account -[because it came via my ISP and setup email address] - used rarely now, but functional.

 • Windows Live Mail [WLM]- two accounts, one is day to day, the other is for personal and formal administration etc.

 • Plus two others.....these are the other mandatory accounts for @gmail and @yahoo, for all the other 'junk' stuff.
There is no problem at all with access to the WLM accounts - gained via a Quick Launch icon on the Task Bar, however, the only time that I use WLM Online is when I need access away from home. I did have a quick look at WLM Online today, and although it appears to be fine, I can't say for sure as I didn't have the time to test it out.

The frustration is that even with the attempted workaround, things haven't changed and I'm still plagued with the crazy 'alpha symbols' bug in my sent emails, plus my 'Sent' Folder does not recognise any of the content - names and addresses, of my Contacts Folder...not even my own!!

I'm now going to have a good look at all the settings that I have in place for Windows Mail [which I have no problems with at all], and try to reproduce the same settings over at WLM. It's worth a try.

I'll get back.....whatever the results may be.

In answer to your valid point - the Update was automatically uninstalled through the System Restore, and I subsequently reinstalled it - however, the problems remain. And as for the naming of the accounts - I refer to my WLM accounts as Hotmail simply because they are @hotmail.

Edited;
Additionally, I forgot to mention that the first part of my original post appears to be resolved. Since I did the System Restore and Reinstall of WLE 2011, I've not had another 'wlsettings.exe - Entry Point not Found' warning panel appear, and nor have there been any further 'APPCRASH' issues.....one small win at least!

EDITED 2: FAMOUS LAST WORDS [above]
APPCRASHes continued, but in the meantime, a solution has been found and applied, and no problems since applying the fix. A full follow-up report will follow, after which the big tick for solving the problem will be given...

Cheers mate.

Re: Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail acco

Introduction and Acknowledgement:

Before I give the details of the solutions to the Windows Live Mail issues [three of them] that this thread addresses, I must first and foremost acknowledge and give thanks for the invaluable advice and support of Forum member !Firedog of Windows Live Solution Centre.

There were in fact three separate and distinct issues that were each causing problems within my Windows Live Settings and Windows Live Mail Hotmail accounts. A brief outline of each of those problems is given within the quote panel below;

Solutions to each of the problems, follow after this quote panel;

1..........This first problem arose because two Folders [Sharing, and Installer] in Windows Live Settings [WLSettings.exe] , each contained identical files [uxcore.dll], and it was the conflict between the two files that was causing the crash;

First of all was this warning message, which appeared each time I opened my Hotmail account:

A check of Problems Reports and Solutions showed that I was experiencing a major difficulty - an APPCRASH with Hotmail, but I didn't have a clue about how to fix it. This is the View of the Problem Details;

View attachment 21022

2..........This second problem was caused because of a conflict between encoding systems in Windows Live Mail;

But then when I check my 'Sent' Folder after the email has been despatched, I find that the text has become corrupted with 'alpha' symbols replacing all inverted commas that I used in the original text. This same error happens if the original text is returned back to me from an original addressee;

I did my restore back to the 20th, then updated Windows with what was waiting in the queue. Then no ‘wlsettings.exe’ warning “GONG†at hotmail startup, so that’s fine. You’ll also see ma’am, that I’ve used as many “inverted commasâ€

3..........I have been advised that the following problem is a major 'bug' in Microsoft Windows Live Mail, and that this will be resolved through the Windows Update system, in due course.

In addition to this problem, if I want to look at individual emails in the 'Sent' Folder, each one is now headed with the following warning bar;

SOLUTION #1.....Conflicting identical files [uxcore.dll] in Windows Live Settings causing APPCRASH reporting:

The solution to this problem is here;

Quote:

In the meantime, try this: in Windows Explorer (WinKey+E) navigate to %programfiles%\Windows Live. Once there, conduct a search for uxcore.dll. There may be more than one copy, in different folders. Because you're using a different OS from me, I can't be precise, but you should only have one copy, with version no. 15.4.3502.0922, in the Windows Live\Shared folder. Rename any others - for example in the Installer folder - to uxcore.old, reboot and test.

Unquote.

SOLUTION #2.....Conflicting encoding systems in Windows Live Mail - Hotmail accounts Email text issue.

The Solution to this problem is here;

Quote;

The setting that dictates whether quotes are 'smartened' or not is saved in the registry, but the developers forgot to put a command into the GUI to turn it on or off like they did for converting keystrokes to smileys. So you have to change it manually in the registry if you don't like it the way it is. If you've never played with the registry before, you should always set a restore point so that you can return your computer to the state it was in before you made changes to the registry:

Create a restore point

1.....With WLMail closed, click Start, type regedit into the search box and press Enter. You will have to give Administrator permission to continue.

2.....Using the tree in the left-hand pane, navigate to;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Compose\Preferences\PostEditor\Autoreplace

(HKCU is just the common abbreviation for HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The change will only apply to the current Windows user account.)

3.....In the right-hand pane, double-click on SmartQuotes.

4.....In the pop-up that appears, enter 0 for the Value Data and click OK.

5.....Close the registry editor, launch WLMail and test.

Unquote.

SOLUTION #3.....

This is known bug in Windows Live Mail, which apparently will be addressed by Microsoft through the Update System.

:D That's it......and I hope that this post will be of some assistance to other Forum Members faced with the same or similar issues.

Re: Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail acco

Thanks for the update and the explanation and the solutions that worked in this situation. I suggested contacting that Forum because I suspected they would be more familiar with the problems and have better and more targeted solutions - and they did.

I'm happy to hear that things are back to normal. While we appreciate the information, I sincerely hope nobody else ever experiences the problem you encountered and needs to use these solutions - but it's great to have them here and kind of you to take the time and effort to post them.

If you consider the issue resolved, please report the thread "solved" so others looking for answers will see that this thread contains one.

Good luck and best wishes!

Re: Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail acco

Hi,

I was referred to this post with as I have a similar problem. I have Windows Vista Home Premium and it is 64 bit. I have been trying to install an update titled "Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)" since 19/10/2010 when it was released but I have been unable to, because as soon as I try to do the update I get the message "Error(s) found: Code 800401E4. Windows Update encountered an unknown error".

I have been searching for a solution to this error for months by trawling through other discussions online but have found nothing of use. I really want to get rid of this annoying message. Other updates that have come after this do not work either ("Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista for x64-based systems", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175)", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467174)").

Something else of note is that there is also an optional update entitled "Realtek driver update for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" that will not update either. In any combination of these updates (either both or either one of them selected) the update does not work and the same error message is given.

Please help with this annoyance. I will provide any further information you need.

OK, I have a new problem now. When I try to click uninstall, it does not work. In fact, it does not work if I try and uninstall anything through this menu. The same dialogue box comes up (see attached image). What would have caused this??
