Hi jd65,

Go to: Online banking security - internet banking security with Northern Bank and click on the check computer link and then view details and see if there are any items with red x's that will prevent you from using online banking. If so, please post what they are. This includes a test for Java, BTW.

Go to: Online banking security - internet banking security with Northern Bank and click on logon and then e-banking and it should prompt you to install special security software. If it doesn't, then the issue may be that your security isn't allowing the Active-X control to install for some reason. Please post whatever error message you get if you can't install this software.

After that, and assuming it is a Trusted Site, then I'm not sure what else to try as I'm not sure what security features the bank requires or that IE is either lacking or blocking (and I'm not ready to open an account in a foreign country just to test this). You may want to adjust the security settings and advanced settings to see if you can fix the problem especially if it identifies the general problem for you. Try both higher and lower settings. Try enabling Active-X features (or at least requesting a prompt). Make sure you have cookies enabled (most places like banks require them). Try enabling scripting (especially Java scripting) and see if that helps. Compare the settings in the XP computer with those in the Vista computer to see if there is ANYTHING whatsoever that is different and then see if changing what's in Vista to match what's in XP helps. When done, put everything back the way it was so you don't end up creating problems with other sites due to the changes.

If that doesn't work, you can try the following generic steps to see if they help (but read them carefully and understand the consequences before you actually do anything):

Tips for solving problems with Internet Explorer

If that doesn't resolve the problem, then try the following two procedures in the order presented:

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode [Applies to IE7 & IE8 in all OSS]
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)? (NOTE: If you attempt this step, this makes many changes to IE that you may need to restore later (including re-installing add-ons and reconfiguring default settings) and you will lose some information (history, cookies, autocomplete,...)).

I hope this helps. If not, I'd try the bank again and ask immediately for a supervisor and see if they can assist you. This can't be the first time they've encountered this and I'm sure SOMEONE there knows how to resolve the problem - if you can get to that person.

Good luck!

That should do it, as long as they are using IE. If they aren't that would be worth trying.

Thanks everyone. have checked computer and it shows this:
"Your computer does not support PDF-files. You must install Adobe Reader on your computer in order to read bank documents in eBanking. Please download Adobe Reader at Adobe"
I have adobe installed and up to date.
Tried ebank in Firefox and able to get to part for password but then message to say password must be at least 8 digits but my password has 10.
Never had this problem with Nationwide.

If you can use Firefox and the only issue there is a problem with the password (it passed the computer check and loaded the security software and allowed you to get to the point where you could login and the only error involved a problematic password - not some system problem or whatever), then contact the bank's technical support department and have them change the password to one it will accept and then login using that new password and you should be set (maybe the password is incorrect - maybe it got put in as the PIN instead of the password or maybe it somehow got changed). That should get you in. Once in, change the password to one you will remember that is safe and acceptable and in compliance with the rules. Keep them on the line while you do this to make sure it works. Check a few things to make sure you can function (get a statement, check your balances, check your payment history, or whatever).

In Adobe X, go to Edit / Preferences / Internet and make sure the box to open PDF files at the top is checked. If it wasn't checked, that might be why you had problems with IE (though you should have had the same with Firefox, so it's a bit confusing).

Banks can be funny about things like this because they're so careful to avoid being hacked or used by someone without the right authority. I've used the same bank for 20 years and ever since they implemented online banking and had some problems at first, but have been fine since then (Citibank). They're all different. This one seems a bit more security-conscious than most I've worked on before and I suspect that it's a matter of getting the settings configured properly (including theirs) and once you get it to work a couple of times you'll be fine from that point forward (with Firefox). Whether you want to pursue the ability to use other browsers is up to you - we'll help as much as we can but I honestly think it's someone who actually knows what they're talking about at the bank's technical support department who can help you best.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thank you for all your help. I was able to log on by letting bank find my used name on memory card and it entered it and all I needed was password.

Hi jd65,

It was our pleasure - glad we could help.

Congrats. I thought in the end the bank would be the one to solve the problem (and was likely the cause). Glad to hear it's resolved.

I will request this thread be marked as solved.

Thanks for letting us know - it's appreciated.

Good luck and best wishes!
