Problems with WLM attachments

I use WLM Desktop Build 15.4 on Vista Home Basic SP2

I use it to access 4 different mail accounts from different vendors and this problem applies to ALL the accounts.

I cannot open or save ANY attachments (regardless of extension) from ANY of the accounts.

I can drag the attachment to the desktop and open it perfectly well there, but if I try to double click it from within the mail item, or to right-click "open", or to Save or Print - nothing happens, no error message - nothing!

This has been going on for a couple of months.

Any ideas??

Welcome, I have not reviewed all the suggestions given in the above post. However, I would suggest the following if the above does not help

Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full, updated scan with Malwarebytes.
If that does not help
Try with another browser.
Finally try a clean boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Actually, now that I think about it try the clean boot after the scans, It may be your antivirus stopping the attachments from opening. Be sure to untick your anti virus, too with the clean boot.

None of that has any effect. I have run various anti-malware scans. Remember I am running WLM Desktop - it doesn't run in a browser!

You unticked your anti virus during the clean boot, with no effect?

Try opening another administrator user account and see if the mail works.

Suggestions only :

1. Check your anti-virus program that you have installed.
If it has e-mail scanning option and is enabled, please disable it.
At worst, disable the entire AV program and see if that solves the problem.

2. Open WLM > Tools > Safety Options > Security >
under Virus Protection .... uncheck " Do not allaow attachments .... "
under Download Images .... uncheck " Block images and other external contecnt .... "

3. Here are the tutorials about UN-able to open attachments directly from Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail :

My Computer

OK - I have rebooted with all anti-virus software disabled - no change
Item 2 was done ages ago
The tutorials are no help because this problem occurs with EVERY type of attachment

Interestingly attachments will print direct from the mail item, they just won't open or save. To view them I have to drag them to the desktop and then they open normally

My Computer

I just started having problems opening attachments in Windows Mail today. I have version 6.0.6000.16386.
I first was notified that Windows Media Player had crashed, I then went to Windows mail to see if I could open up a attachment with the Player. I clicked on the paper clip but there were none. I foud out if I double clicked it would open up the e-mail and then double click on the attachment of that mail and the player would pop up and the attachment would play. All of my attachments are gone even in my save folders. Also the print has changed in the From---To ---Subject line. It is like the setting has been changed. Info. on the player crash below:

P.S.
This is my personal opinion.....

I had the WLM 2011 version and I hated it. The layout is completely different and I had nightmare trying to find the options.

I switched back to 2009 version which is a very much similar to WM, so there is no need for learning new procedures, unlike 2011 version.

My Computer

Thank you for your suggestions. The only thing that I had downloaded was IE9 yesterday so I rolled back to IE8 and everything is ok now. With the IE9 I had to double click on the subject and then double click on the attachment in the body of the e-mail as there were no paper clips. With the IE8 I could get to the attachment in two clicks and then the pop up do you want to open this file etc. As soon as I clicked yes the media player would open.
The IE9 is a lot faster and loads the web page quick and I am sure I will go back to it in a few days.
I just wanted to find out the cause first. I guess the security in IE9 blocked any mail that had a picture or video in it as I could not get even one to open. As soon as I reinstalled IE8 everything was ok.
Again thank you and I will check out WLM.
