lost file from email attachment

hi-
i accidentally forgot to hit "save-as" after working on a microsoft power point file that i really want to retrieve. i've done everything i can think of, including searching just for files edited on 7/31/11, and saw a thread on this website that recommended searching by C:\users\(my name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temorary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5, which did not work. i've looked through so many files and spent 2 hours trying to recover this document. i have internet explorer 7. any ideas? is it true that vista just deletes these temporary files immediately (ie, should i give up and start over)?
thank you!

Hello afriedenberg and welcome to the forums

Which version of Office are you using? 2003/2007/2010 etc.

No worries, it's what we're here for :)

I just need a little more information, would I be correct in thinking that you opened this email attachment, did some work on it without making any saves at all, then closed it without clicking save? The key part is that I want to know if you made any saves on this document

hi tom-
i did save it (many, many times) but just hitting the save button (not the "save as"). i can't believe i did that, because it's happened to me in the past, but never have i really wanted a document back so badly. i searched on my C drive for anything even created/saved on 7/31/11 and nothing from powerpoint came up, so either it's hidden (and i don't know how to find it despite clicking the search for hidden files box) or it's gone. argh. also, i tried doing the autosave thing, but the directions for the links you sent must be for an older version (?) of microsoft- i can't figure out with 2007 how to turn on the autosave... again, thanks for your help.

Dont disregard any approach suggested. Each tries to solve from different approaches.

Open the menu by clicking on the Office logo in the top left hand corner of powerpoint. Go to the save tab. Tell me where the default "AutoRecover file location" is please

Hi-
I am definitely not disregarding any approaches or suggestions. all suggestions i have tried and will continue to try. so i'm not sure what you mean when you say the "AutoRecover file location" - when i go to the save tab, the default save location is in my documents folder. also- i figured out how to do the autosave on 2007 office, and my autosave is on and is supposed to save every 10 minutes! not sure if that helps, or means i'll actually be able to find this document, but somehow it looks like it should've been saved. thanks again everyone. and by the way, when i re-opened an email with the power point file, and just hit save, it did look like it was saved under users\allison\appdata\local\microsoft\temporary internet file\IE5, but when i typed that into the search box, it came back saying nothing was found. then i followed those folders, and opened each one, but none of the files after i opened microsoft folder had any powerpoint files.
