Try the Icon cache, but I dont think that will be the answer.

The issue of this happening every so often concerns me also, but, you did not state what happens afterwards, as an example, you did not post that you ran an antivirus program to correct it , but, instead , you left impression that it corrected itself. So, as richc46 has suggested , your worst case scenario would be you have been attacked by a rogue of some sort and it has changed your settings, in which case, Malwarebytes' Antimalware would detect it, if that is the only thing involved, sometimes these rogues will need other programs to stop the process first , such as Rkill , which can be found at Bleeping Computer, which is a site i participate in also.

Perhaps as richc46 has suggested, you may well want to run free version of Malwarebytes' Antimalware ( mbam )
Free link found here. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Just be sure to watch what you click, Cnet tries to trick you, only click the free download. Here is how you use it. First thing is you want to update its definitions. then what it suggest is to run it in normal mode, versus safe mode, and for you to use quick scan, When it is done, it makes a log of results. In most cases , you can have mbam fix these, but, if you have threats detected in your registry, you would want to quarantine them, not remove them. Post back what your findings were , please .

You may want to try running your browser in Sandboxie or something similar when visiting those sites. I would do a bunch of scans to try to verify you don't have an infection. Then when you go to rude sites that try to change your settings, use something that shields your system from your browser.
