Adobe suddenly DROPS Vista64 support?

I have Vista x64 and it has hummed along just fine until yesterday. I couldn't watch any YouTube videos because YouTube said I need to update my Adobe Flash plugin.

OK, so I use the Chrome browser, usually. But even in IE, same message. I go to Adobe and check out their Flash Player 11 download.

Note:Flash Player does not support 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista. Flash Player 11 now includes support for Windows 7 64-bit.

Not supporting WinXP I can understand. But Vista?

I've been trying all night, and no dice. My only solution was to use a developer's debugger version that is constantly nagging me to update, and it STILL doesn't work in IE, only Chrome.

Anyone else want to verify if I'm reading this right?

Thats too funny.. For 3 tries, adobe was showing a different flash version, though half the site wasn't working.

They must have been doing a updae rollout, as it had no issue with x64 Vista until my 3rd time there, plus now the sites responsive..

This is indeed an odd thing.

Here found old versions:

Well the point of this thread is that the newest version isn't officially for Vista 64-bit.

At least some people understand.

I tried installing the latest Flash 11 (it will install), but refuses to play any Flash content on site using Flash. I just get image placeholders everywhere.

Guess it's time to upgrade, but I am a little teed off, esp since Win7 is little more than "Vista Plus", and Vista 64 has been just fine for me.

That's the prob with "free" software (Flash player) I guess. The company can stop supporting it at any time. But at least a warning (a month?) would have been nice. "Hey guys, we don't plan on supporting 64 bit Vista anymore".

Have you tried the win7 version? Vista and 7 are nearly the same.

They are pretty similar and just because it might work doesn't mean that Adobe didn't program it not to work.

Well, I got it working. :D

Solution: Turn off Adobe Update service, under...

Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services >> Adobe Flash Player Update Service - set to "disable"

My problem was after uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting and trying out IE and Chrome, I could get it working for a few minutes, and then suddenly Flash pages would stop working altogether, saying I needed to update my Flash player.

It occurred to me that if it worked for a few minutes and then suddenly did not, there must be some background or hidden service telling Flash Player not to work on purpose, and lo and behold, 'tis true.

The Updater service eventually turns off Flash Player 11 on Vista 64 for no particularly good reason. In my case, just a few minutes. Once I disabled that, I've been all good. Maybe that is part of the reason why Adobe's Flash download page lists that Vista 64 is no longer supported? Maybe they have problems getting the updater to work right under 64-bit Vista and XP...I dunno. Anyway, turn off the updater service, and you'll be good for now, if you are having problems like I did.

I've had no similar problems - mine has been updating merrily all along but that's because you should be using the 32-bit IE not the 64-bit one, despite having a 64-bit Vista. 64-bit browsers are really a bit of a novelty still as many add-ons/plug-ins aren't yet compatible.

I never said I was using a 64-bit browser.

Chrome isn't even available for Windows as 64-bit.

Glad your not having any issues. I'm not either, anymore. That's only because I disabled Adobe's updater service (see above).

Maybe because I already had it installed?

This get even more curious, I just downloaded the installer and installed over the top of the already working one and I got the usual Adobe page, Flash installed successfully. It shows enabled in add-ons in both IE9 and FF8.

Also curious there isn't any announcement on their forums that I can find...maybe I need to look harder perhaps but my first search produced nothing concrete.

Yes, Ex, it is very odd. But what can I say.

Even now, here's what I get when I visit Adobe's Flash Player page. Read the smaller yellow note in the middle of the page

However, I still got it to work as long as I immediately disabled the Updater service after installation.
