Windows Mail question

Hi. My laptop running Vista 32bit crashed and burned. I have recovered the harddrive and all the files, but have to temporarily revert to an older computer running XP. Is it possible to import/convert the mail files/folders from Windows Mail to Outlook Express?

Thanks a lot!

I don't have Outlook installed but I think it has an option to import addresses from other e-mail accounts. Try looking at the help file.

Yes, I have imported and exported OE files, but in this case, the windows mail file extension is different, than OE, and I don't have the option of exporting from Window Mail since the Vista machine is dead. The OE help does not refer to Windows Mail.

Thanks.

Interesting that the two Microsoft apps don't support one another.

You said that you recovered the hard drive from the Vista machine. Depending on the connections on the XP machine, you might able to boot from the Vista hard drive.

Does Microsoft Mail store addresses on the hard drive?

Couple of good suggestions - boot from recovered HD, and converting to Live Mail. I checked it out, and it looks like Live Mail is compatible with both OE and Windows Mail.

Thanks.

Still trying to get this solved. I took the advice to try to boot from the disc recovered from my deceased laptop. I'm connecting it via usb to the XP laptop, and I can see the disc and all the files, but I can't boot from it. The XP laptop doesn't have a usb option in the bios. Interestingly, when I press the F key to change the boot sequence, it shows a usb option, but when I select it it doesn't work.

I have also downloaded and installed Live Mail, but have not figured out how to get the "contacts" and "messages" from the old drive and usable in Live Mail. In the past, using Outlook Express, I could export both, then import into the email client on a different computer. Not sure how to accomplish this without that export option.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Gary

I'm not sure how to export/import from those mail clients because I don't use them other than the one I use for work. However I do know that you can only use an installation of Windows in the computer it was install in. Otherwise you will have registry and driver errors which very well end up with blue screens or freezes. It just can't be done.

Because of the problem I previously had with a non-bootable drive, I found that the only way to boot from the second drive is to disconnect the primary drive and reboot. However, that was using a SATA connector from the second hard drive to the MOBO.

In fact, I was going to ask in the forum if there's any way to set up a dual boot from two different hard drives versus having two operating systems on one drive but never got around to it.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be possible to boot from that drive, but someone suggested it so figured I'd give it a shot.

I'm not sure why you need to boot from that drive. I didn't go back through the thread but I thought all you needed was the files. If you can find someone with a PC who is willing to let you plug in to his MOBO and disconnect the primary hard drive, then you would be able to boot it.

Vista/windows mail seems to use a different file format for contacts than does outloook express and live mail, so the files themselves wouldn't work. Each email client has an import/export function that will - I believe - put the files into a format that can be imported into another client. If I could boot from the drive, I could export the data then import it into the new one. The recovered drive iis fram a laptop. I have a desktop and another laptop. I haven't tried it before, but you're saying if I connect the drive as the primary, the pc will boot from it? I haven't taken a laptop apart before except to replace memory, but guess I coiuld give it a shot!

Thanks a lot.

Because of the way it's designed Windows will more than likely crash if used in another computer. I will also require that you activate it. I suppose that it would be ok for a short period of time but don't depend upon it working. There has got to be a way to import. If there is an import option and it doesn't work something may be wrong with the files.

If the hard drive connections on the second computer are the same (SATA for instance) as for your laptop hard drive, then you should be able to connect the laptop harddrive to a SATA port on the other machine. Of course, you need a SATA cable, which is pretty cheap, and a spare connector for power on the machine. You would need to unplug the primary hard drive. I believe you can use the same copy of Windows on two machines as long as both are yours and one is a PC and the other is a laptop.

I don't know how this applies to retail copies but OEM copies from manufacturers are linked to the computer it came with and sometimes they refuse to boot in other computers. Legally they cannot be used in other computers. Windows will actually require activation once it realizes such a major hardware change. Also, the hardware drivers and registry settings are for the computer the system is installed in and more than likely won't work in other computers without blue screens or freezes. In addition the computer may not have the option of booting into an external device. It might work long enough for him to do whatever he needs to do but I wouldn't count on it.

I concur with Townsbg , one copy , that is it. Someone with more knowledge than me will have to change my understanding of this, if i am wrong.

It's not just the one copy license, As far as I know Windows will not correctly work in a computer other than the one it was installed in. There will more than likely be blue screens and freezes if it works at all. Windows can't be ported from system to system.
