Not really, no.

There are some web browser games that use it, other than that its not very important.

Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D.

If you don't do much of that, then I guess not.

I think that facebook games use java to run. Although they might use alternatives such as Shockwave and what not.

Uninstall java, then try to play one of your facebook games. if it runs, then you're okay for now.

I don't think that this is relevant, but I found this on google.

If you think that your java might be "disabled" then do this.

Note   Note
  • Click start menu, click run, type cmd, type java, enter
it should appear something like that,

    Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
    (to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
    (to execute a jar file)

    Where options include:
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
    The default VM is client.

-cp <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
-classpath <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
A ; separated list of directories, JAR archives,
and ZIP archives to search for class files.
    -D<name>=<value>
    set a system property
    -verbose[:class|gc|jni]
    enable verbose output
-version print product version and exit
    -version:<value>
require the specified version to run
-showversion print product version and continue
    -jre-restrict-search | -jre-no-restrict-search
include/exclude user private JREs in the version search
-? -help print this help message
-X print help on non-standard options
    -ea[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    -enableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<cl…
    enable assertions
    -da[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    -disableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<c…
    disable assertions
    -esa | -enablesystemassertions
    enable system assertions
    -dsa | -disablesystemassertions
    disable system assertions
    -agentlib:<libname>[=<options>]
    Load native agent library <libname>, e.g. -agentlib:hprof
    See also, -agentlib:jdwp=help and -agentlib:hprof=help
    -agentpath:<pathname>[=<options>]
load native agent library by full pathname
    -javaagent:<jarpath>[=<options>]
load Java programming language agent, see java.lang.instrument

    -splash:<imagepath>
show splash screen with specified image
  • That means its enabled, if you don't have it go to www.sun.com and get it there

Ah just saw your specs right now, me and alot of the other members have the exact same laptop as you.

Mine is broken down right now, and I have to buy a new hard drive for it, along with a new battery.

For now im using my HP Pavilion G6.

Cheers to your lazy way out of the problem.

I understand, nobody will notice the issue, I've never heard of anyone needing to use the java control panel anyways. By the time that comes around, there should be another fix/update for this.

question for you, should I when I have the new hardware, yank the hdd out of this one, slap her in an enclosure, and use her as another backup drive in conjunction with my iomega external?

I personally wouldn't do that..

500GB is a rather large HD. Just keep it factory.

You could get a 500GB external drive for about $50 at a local tech store, safer and more reliable than pulling out your own.
