Okay I know lots of people have this problem but I've read a lot of answers and possible solutions but I'm afraid I don't understand most of them as I am completely untecchy!
I have Vista HP and windows mail through virginmedia (UK). My mail has been working fine for months until this morning I received this message and now can't receive mail. I can still SEND it however.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
I have, as advised, switched off email scanning on my Norton Antivirus program (360). Still does not work. I have checked all the right boxes in my only email account. Still does not work.
Also I do not have problems receiving emails on my laptop (Mac powerbook) or on my iphone, or on my webmail account. But as I am an author I have to receive many large manuscripts etc by email and would prefer to receive them on my desktop pc - the one on which I can't receive emails any more. I do not dare uninstall and reinstall windows mail as I don't wish to lose all the emails in my inbox.

My ISP (virginmedia) is hopeless and can't offer any advice.

Please could someone provide me with advice/a solution which I can actually understand.

Hi Ignoramus, and welcome to the forums.

Try saving all of your emails onto your desktop in a folder, then reinstalling windows mail?

And I'm not 100% sure, but isn't windows mail just a software version of www.hotmail.com?

That's around 2500 emails I'm going to have to save! I use my inbox as a kind of filing system! And no, windows mail is the mail system provided by Vista. I know there's also Windows Live Mail but haven't tried moving to that yet, if I should.

I personally use windows live mail, as its online so even if my laptop gets stolen I'll be able to access the emails from anywhere in the world.

I don't suppose using a system restore point from before this happened would affect anything?

system restore used to the point where it happened. Still no luck. This is MOST frustrating as I can still SEND emails but when I try to receive any the same old error message comes up.
Re Windows Live Mail it seems to be telling me to change my email address to hotmail or livemail - a REAL PAIN as I will have to inform all my contacts. I do have a webmail account with virginmedia so my emails are already backed up there. Why must I change the email address I've had for over eight years now because of this glitch? Seems unfair and not MY fault. Anyone from microsoft care to comment?

I'm sorry that this is happening to you.

Our website is not directly linked to Microsoft, although we do have some of Microsoft's MVP's here on our forums.

I believe that you can send out a mass message to all of your clients, notifying them of the email change, but other than that, this seems to be a rare error.

YAY! For your information I just did this as suggested in another part of the forums. I backed up the entire contents of my windows mail (using file/export) - took no more than a few minutes. I was about to uninstall/reinstall windows mail, but before I did that I just checked send/receive again and bingo i started receiving again! Maybe I'd just created some kind of logjam? Or there was some corrupted message? But this is odd because like I say I didn't have to delete or restore any messages, just exported them. Anyways thanks for the help!:D

Glad you got it all sorted out! I guess that your inbox was full?
