My old 64 bit Vista HP computer died. Bought a 32 bit Vista HP computer of the same general type to replace it. The file backup for the old computer is on an external hard drive. I need to retrieve old email from that backup. What is the best way to do that?

You may want to make sure that the external is recognized and then go to search by the start button and type some pertinent phase or words from the mail. When it pops up just clikc on it.

Okay I've gotten to Advanced Restore and i selected "restore files from backup made on another computer. When the list comes up, all the backups (i did them monthly) read "backup location is not available"

Just go and find them manually - like Rich suggested.
Exactly the same as you would look for any other file.
I don't use windows backup, but I think they may just be in .zip files
