Solved IE-9 doesn't work with Nasa website

M

mdiemer

When I go to Nasa.gov (to check on the Pluto Mission - don't miss it!), I get a screen saying I need to update my browser (IE-9). So, I closed that screen, since I can't update IE on Vista beyond IE-9; and now I just get their website, but no content. Is IE-9 not able to "run" Nasa.gov?

My Computer

If they have disabled functionality of the website for IE 9 then you will have to use another browser. Over than upgrade windows there isn't anything you can do.

Thanks townsbg. That's what I was afraid of. Oh well, guess I'll have to use a different computer. I like keeping things simple on my Vista drive. So I just have IE on it.

If you ever run into problems with IE9, try another browser such as Firefox or Chrome.

I did have Firefox, but discovered that IE9 was actually faster! Anyway, I have another drive I can boot from with W7, so no worries.

My Computer

Pity I just upgraded my own Vista to W7 otherwise I could have tested this for you. I'm, surprised that their websaite is so fussy actually..!

Well, being who they are, it's a very high-tech website. They do have amazing animations and such, so I guess that is the reason.

My Computer

According to one page of theirs they support IE6.x and above so I find this all hard to believe, expecially as MS still support Vista SP2 and therefore IE9.
Have you tried resetting IE9 (Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, reset and Ok...then re-enable all your add-ons as required.

I'm having similar issues with Vista/IE9 and the Met Office weather site. If you enter a location and then look at maps (such as rainfall) all I see on Vista is a blue background where the map should be. It used to work but now doesn't. No other sites I use have issues. These images from W8.1

It would be great if anyone could confirm IE9 isn't working on this.

I've just tried using a glype proxy to spoof my user agent and only an advert appears, so it's incompatible.
You'll have to download SeaMonkey to go on it (Firefox with a better UI, an email client, and less memory leaks - better coding), if you want to access it, sorry.

Thanks. I kind of suspected as much (unfortunately), so it looks like I'm going to have to investigate different browsers then at some point.

Works just fine for me in Firefox 41.0.2 as long as I activated Flash for some parts of it and told it to remember that page. The map is a gif image anyway I believe.

Thanks guys. What I'll probably do is image my drive and then try different browsers and see which I prefer. I knew this was coming with Vista and IE9 (although its still officially supported I believe).

My Computer

I really don't recommend using IE9. Firefox is a far better and more secure alternative. I no longer recommend Chrome as it's become too bug-ridden and in any case is prime fodder for US spying despite all the denials. Seamonkey? Well it's an entire project, so try it if you want to. I would create a restore point beforehand though, in case you change your mind. Your antivirus may object to various parts of it too, be warned.

Yes IE9 is still officially supported by Microsoft, i.e. there's a security patch for it most every month, but that doesn't mean websites have to support it. Only Vista users are still running IE9 (XP could only be updated to IE8, Windows 7 can be updated to IE11), and we are a rare breed. I was an IE die-hard until a month ago, when I finally installed Firefox. (I value privacy too much to use Chrome.) Despite monthly security patches, IE9 is becoming something of a security risk: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-upd...see-tls-1-1-tls-1-2-ie9-internet-options.html.

Indeed and part of the reason I like Firefox is that I can install dark themes which makes it easier on my eyes.
