Mail In Rebates

What is REALLY with (MIR's) Main In Rebates, except the obvious:

1) Many people will not bother to 'play the game' and not bother with it [they keep the money]

2) They pospone a negative cash flow [use your money up to 12 weeks]

What else am I missing here? :huh:

The whole point of a MIR is to make the product seem like it is a really good deal (they advertise the post MIR price) so people purchase them. Then, they forget to do the MIR. BAM. More income. I believe the stats are 30% (or 25%) of people actually do the MIRs. Thats a quarter of them. WOW.

It is just another way that Companies can exploit the less intelligent of us.

hmmmm i just sent off my mail in rebate for my new ram
it was $70 with a $25 mail in rebate........... so i'm waitin for my check

Awhile back I got a $35.00 rebate back on a CITI [cash?] card. I got curious when I noted that the card number was identical in characters to a credit card, complete with a PIN#.
This forced me to read the very-fine print on the reverse of the paper it was attached to. It gave all the appearances (going into rates, penalties, etc.) that if one paid for something that was a few cents over the amount it was issued for it would revert to a credit card account. If it didn't why would it go to all the trouble to detail things that applied only to a credit card account?

So GREAT, all I needed was another damn credit card to keep track of It further had an enclosure stating that if you did not specifically opt-out they would furnish your financial information to associates and other lending agencies [...wait a minute here]:sa: SOMETHING Stinks! I only signed on for a rebate, not a credit background check...

I promptly spent exactly $35 and made it a point to call CITI bank immediately to cancel the account. I was told, "it did not have to be cancelled as it was only a cash card".

Maybe so, but why would a cash card have the face of a credit card complete with a PIN#, and CITI advise me they were going to share my financial information?

National rebate #'s are actually quite less...12 to 14 % participation.

I wonder why it is so low <not really>

I have adopted a new selection policy... shop for the ones without the MIR's! Posting a selling price that deducts the MIR is BS and misleadingly PC anyway...

MIR's are great usually, just a pain in the ass. If you want the price, you have to deal with it or find another.

While I am not a fan of them, I have gotten some good deals. However, be careful! The way they set them up allows them to ignore them if they don't get them or mess them up. I believe they have you send them to a P.O. box or something and you can't do it metered so they can't track them. Basically, if you mess up, then they say "**** you".

Mail-in rebates suck BIG TIME!

I usually send them but they take forever. If it's under $20 I won't bother with it.

A local store i give all my business to outside of Online purchases will if asked print out the manuf. rebate form at checkout time...
They also give out duplicate product reciepts for all Rebate qualified items...

Handy.
