Well its not good to constantly run by wall Plug, but you can. My suggestion is to Interchange the two. Use your battery until it dies, then put it in the computer until it is finished charging. when its finished you can remove the battery so it doesn't sustain any damage from overcharging.

Hope it helped,
Eli

You have to be careful with some laptops as they are designed to actually run off battery at all times, if they are plugged in they trickle charge the battery whilst still actually running from it. You may even find that the laptop will not work at all without the battery.

I agree that for the sake of the battery it is best to alternate between AC and battery power as suggested.

Also, of course running from the mains with the battery installed gives you added protection in the form of a pseudo-UPS system. This can be especially useful if you are running on a supply that is less than perfect or has the chance of being disconnected due to multiple adaptors

if you plan to use it only as a desktop, then i would recommend that you discharge the battery then remove it. then use it with a/c power all of the time, unless you have some concern about power usage, but i would not think that a laptop always on would have nowhere near the power draw as a desktop. in that way, you can have the power profile set to max to utilize the cpu fully.

just my two cents...
