I love my D200 but I secretly covet the D700 for its high ISO uber supremacy. My photos mostly suck though. I feel like it's taken me years just to get to grips with the basics of photography, and I'm well aware that none of my work has that flair which seems so natural and spontaneous for some photographers.

I personally concider myself a 'hobby' photographer, And have therefor opted not to go for a digital SLR or anything too fancy.

My choice of cam went out to a very nice point-and-shoot solution in the
Fujifilm Finepix F100fd

Arguably one of the best point-n-shoot cams when it was released =)

I currently have no photos on my pc that ive taken on the cam (cuz my HD died recently and took all of my photos with it :() but I can guarantee that for the average photographer that wants good quality photos but not carry around a luggish EXPENSIVE camera it is a very good choice =D

i dont think its as bad as you think H2SO4,the most important thing for us in order to enjoy this type of hobby is the passion...you may not be able to capture pro-like shots instanly..but as the mighty saying goes "practice makes perfect."
Remember to always be ready as you can when you have an opportunity to take those shots that truly convey your feelings..take tons of them! Have fun!

i definitely agree with you on this Ayporos, most point-and-shoot cameras on the market now are very competent when it comes to specs compare to the pro-cams less the bulk and bucks..most pros do use a point -and -shoot as their back-up.
But of course, people wouldn't spent hundreds or even thousands to upgrade to a dslr for nothing. Point -and-shoot has their limitations and thats why other hobbyist opted to upgrade,to expand their horizons. Anyways,as long as your point-and-shoot cam meet your demand,ENJOY!!!

Aye you are definatelly right Angelo621.

The only real 'issue' I have with the PnS fuji I have is that it doesn't allow me to manually focus and set exposure time.. but apparently the newer fuji PnS's do have this option so atleast they've learned.

Granted the lens/barrel/sensor aren't of as high quality as professional SLR's I've personally found that images taken with this camera are of quite good quality and concidering it is a 12mp camera you can always post process your photos into a smaller resolution with a better 'overall' quality image seeing as 12mp photos serve no real purpose anyway, unless ofc. you plan on printing poster-sized photos.

Hi,

I am hoping to buy a DSLR this fall and I need some advice. Has anyone used the Canon EOS Rebel Xsi (EOS 450D in Britian)? What about this Nikon D60?

I have done some reading on both and the Canon seems to be more so recommended than the D60? Is this an accurate statement?

My budget is between $500-$900 Canadian. I am hoping to get a kit with 2 lenses (an 18-55mm and a 55+ to 250-ish mm). does anyone have some recommendations?

I will probably use it mostly for landscapes, nature, family photos, etc. I consider myself an amateur, using a DSLR only a couple of times. I hope to improve within this skillset.

Thanks,

Extensa

Hi Extensa,

Just to throw a fly into the ointment, as you say you class yourself as an amateur, check the specs on the Sony range a300, A350. The thing with this range is they form a better bridge between the Point & Shoot cameras and the full Pro models. I've looked at the specs of most of the current models and Feel that one of these will be my next upgrade

Sony announces Alpha 300 and 350: Digital Photography Review

If you intend to shoot a lot of landscapes the tilting live view screen is perfect :)

I'd suggest thinking about it from the perspective of which lens line-up you'd like to lock yourself into. The main reason to buy a dSLR over a fixed-lens camera is for the versatility provided by the ability to switch lenses to fit the occasion. Once you come to the conclusion that you'd like to take up photography as a hobby - and if you haven't concluded that there's no reason to buy a dSLR - you can expect your lens expenditure to exceed what you've spent on the camera body. 3 or 4 years from now, the body will be obsolete and you'll the coveting the latest-and-greatest, but the optics of the lenses you bought will still be just as good (or bad), and you'll be reluctant to swap brands because of the lens investment.

Hence, it might be better to first pick the lens line-up, and only then choose an appropriate camera body from that manufacturer.

Indeed lenses will last longer than bodies in the digital world. I bought my new digital body, just some weeks ago and just before I went to China. Studied the manual during the flight. I kept my old lenses from my old non-digital Canon EOS 650, one 35-70, 1:3.5-4.5 and one 100-300, 1:4.5-5.6. One thing is evident: they are not up to the job. Digital cameras require more from the lenses and in particular this one with its full-frame sensor. My lenses have some problem with the sharpness, but in particular with vinjetting. It is clearly visible in the snip of the Great Wall above, where the top corners are clearly darker than the rest of the sky. This can be fixed by a bit of "photoshopping", need to start to learn this. Next investment will be a top lens in the Canon EF L series. Expensive indeed. The digital SLRs are clearly heavier than the non-digital; this makes it necessary to use higher shutter speeds. For some reason, it also feels my camera kicks harder in the hand when shooting. This is all a learning process for me, much more so than I expected.
