It looks better ;)

Seriously, there are a lot of changes under the hood, so the differences are subtle to the casual observer.

However, one very obvious difference is that the desktop is usable straight away after a cold boot - no more waiting a few minutes until Vista 'settles' down before getting down to business.

The start menu is more intuitive. For example, if you want to create a restore point, you type 'create' and the option is there. Vista makes you jump through a few more hoops.

It feels smoother on older / lower speced machines because it manages resources better.

Home networking is much more user friendly.

That's just a few little differences off the top of my head which barely scratch the surface.

Basically, it just feels nicer to use :)

I understand what Trax is talking about. It is down to personal preference if you want to buy it.
I built my system around Vista and will not be buying the new OS because Vista does what I want it to.
However if I was to build a new system for someone else then I ould put 7 on thier system as it is new and slightly more streamlined.
Instead of paying the full price look for OEM versions, they will be cheaper.

Hello Roy.

If you're referring to what I think about 7, it's great, I've installed every build to be 'released' starting with 6801 and it has gotten progressively better; I now have the RTM from TechNet installed and activated and it's snappy (I'm tired of this term but it best describes it) it is half again as 'snappy' as Vista and I really do like Vista, I just installed Vista SP2 from TechNet as a comparison and Se7en is much quicker than Vista. In all the builds (I can't remember which one) I only had BSoDs in one build; it didn't like my video driver.

I'm very pleased with Windows 7! :)

TechNet is well worth the price.

Honestly, I'm finding it hard to imagine something much better than Vista. I understand that the major point in which 7 surpasses Vista is performance. Personally, I don't have much to complain about the performance of my Vista, so it's a little weird to me that I'm not looking forward for the newest OS...

Also, from all the screenshots I've seen, I'm finding it uglier than Vista. Maybe I just didn't see enough, maybe I saw too much. And aesthetics is something I'm willing to pay extra for. A lot extra for. Vista is a huge step up from XP in this sense.

From the reviews and overviews I've read, I have yet to see something new. I mean, new. Vista isn't missing anything (at least significant for an operating system) that 7 offers as far as I know.

Oh well, I guess 7 just didn't get me. Maybe I just didn't get 7... :sarc:

It definitely does boot faster, but there is something a bit cartoony about the GUI... It's strange, I started out really liking it and have got to like it less and less. I'm also one of the people who has never really understood the virulence of the anti-Vista party. Sure, WinFS got pulled, but how many of us would really have felt a huge benefit from having it, even though 'DB-based OS' sounds quite neat as a marketing sound-bite.

My Vista certainly didn't work right out of the box. Id say they both have their strengths. Against the hated OSX I think they would both beat it

OS X is beginning to look very, very tired now, but - and it sticks in my throat to say this - Apple do have a way with these things that MS just seem to struggle to emulate. I think 7 is a good RC and probably a very good OS, with lots of quite useful features, but the GUI is just a bit... well, that's the trouble; it's overdesigned in places and hardly designed at all in others. Like most MS OSs, a real curate's egg.

The overdesigned part that you mentioned, yep, I agree. I already think that Vista is overdesigned, which is why I left off of Vista and stayed with XP until April this year, when XP's mainstream support ended. I was hoping that Microsoft could give us an option to use the XP theme...

Posts Criticising Windows 7

I am left wondering how many critics slagging off at the Windows 7 RC Operating System, have actually worked, and I mean really worked the Operating System through all of it's development colours from day 1, on up to it's present state as a Release Candidate? I'm laying odds that very few, if any, have.

If that is the case, then those critics are all cloaked with the exact same mantle as worn by Windows XP Users when Vista was released. Sadly XP Users still sling the mud at Vista and will probably continue until their OS is abandoned by Microsoft, to sink quickly beneath the waves.

I have been fortunate enough to have not used any other form of Computer OS, other than Vista. I have since spent a very brief time on my Dad's XP OS and found it not only dull and boring, but liken the experience to trying to teach a tortoise how to sprint.

Sure, there have been some rather major Vista glitches where I seemed to be constantly under the cloud of one form of MS Customer Technical Support number, or other, but from my own experience, these issues are now non-existent. From memory and my records, the last time I needed to contact MS for Tech. Support was in October of 2008, and that was to do with an issue about Windows Live OneCare......now also dead in the water!

Actually, part of the fun of learning about Vista has been that at the same time, MS with Vista, was learning about itself. In essence, it seemed at times that MS were treating Vista Users as experimental mice for their own engineering and development systems. And in that is the key to how successful the launch of Windows 7 has been......for once after constant and often very disparaging criticism, I believe that MS finally sat up, took note and learned too from the Vista lesson.

I have yet to venture into the realms of Windows 7, but that has not precluded me from also taking part in the Windows 7 Forums. There I am able to learn first-hand of that OS, through the experiences of that Forum's Members......Users who are considerably more advanced in this field, than I am.

For now though, I will refrain from becoming a "Pseudo-XP User" by presenting any form of criticism of Windows 7, criticism that is based solely on a short "play" in the Windows 7 "sandpit"......I suggest that those in similar circumstances do the same, and hold their peace.
