how about a thread of MP3's / wave, etc of our voices?
we can then explain our requests and get answers via text or even an MP3, etc?

I just found out, it would take soooooooooooooooo much server space and it may become a venue for mP3 sharing

let's just forget it

The way to do it would be to upload the question or answer to YouTube or Vimeo and just post the link on the Forum. I do this with little tutorials I made. My voice is terrible too plus I obviously have a German accent, but here is an example: Command Prompt on Vimeo

What if only registered users are allowed after a certain amount of posts (violators would be banned instantly). And quality really isn't a matter, especially when we're talking about voice.

I just tested out a sample of my voice, and exported it as the lowest quality setting mp3, and my voice was clear enough to understand while the file size itself was 1KB per second, 27 KiloBytes for a 27 second recording (8Kbps).

Just for the sake of comparison, the maximum file sizes allowed to upload are as follows:
bat 87.9 KB
doc 1.91 MB
exe - -
gif 976.6 KB
jpe 976.6 KB
jpeg 976.6 KB
jpg 976.6 KB
log 2.00 MB
nfo 1.91 MB
pdf 8.58 MB
png 2.00 MB
psd 976.6 KB
reg 488.3 KB
swf 8.58 MB
txt 1.91 MB
vbs 878.9 KB
zip 10.00 MB

Say each voice recording would last on average less than a minute (< 60 KB)? That is far less than the limitations of any file type. The only thing is, can the forums support a server side converter that lowers the bitrate to nothing (similarly to Youtube)? There are even free third party online converters (1, 2, and 3), I'm sure the forum server can make automatic requests (i.e. redirect voice uploads to there and take the resulting file).

Unfortunately, I myself don't have much experience in programming, let alone internet languages. I was wondering if it would be something easy enough to be worthwhile considering. Otherwise, it can be up to the posters to do it themselves...

By the way, here's a recording in a few different bitrates and samplerates just for the sake of low-quality speech recording comparison:

(they're not .txt, I couldn't upload .mp3, so you'll just have to download and rename the extensions to .mp3 - there should probably be a possibility to upload .mp3 files if this idea is to take off at all)

If you want to convert to MP3, use Format Factory - easy and excellent quality.

I use Audacity for recording, it's one of the best free software out there. Though good free converters are hard to come around. I'm gonna try Format Factory.

As for changing to mp3, just make sure that the option called Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked (in Folder Options, under the View tab). Then it shouldn't be a problem to just erase the .txt and type .mp3 instead. (I keep this box unchecked by default, because I like to be able to easily manipulate files).
