I killed my HP Laptop :'(
Those people are clueless. I saw some guy in sydney demonstrating windows 7 - he worked for a big company starting with "d", ending in "ell" and I started asking him some questions (my girlfriend was telling me to stop and dont be mean as I walked over and was trying to pull me back) The guy knew nothing, so naturally you take advantage of that when you want to see the Dell gurus preach the newest OS they are trying to flog to the consumers. I started acting like a clueless consumer

So I went to ask him about all the features that windows 7 offered consumers just to see if he knew his stuff. Initially I asked him about 32-bit and 64-bit architecture. He kinda knew that the 64-bit let you use above 3.5GB of ram, but didnt know why. I didnt press him, so I asked him about Direct X 11. He started talking about the ATI 5000 series. I asked him what would direct X 11 offer better than Direct X 10. He said it would look better, when I asked him how, he had no clue, kept rambling on. I then asked him about virtualisation and XP mode - once again clueless. I asked him would that new netbook (atom processor need I say more) would run the newest games, he said no (1+ for dell guy) so he started trying to flog an Alienware XPS system. I said how bout something smaller like a laptop that will play the newest games. He said this- The XPS whatever that had a Nvidia G280m in there - i asked him if it would play direct x 11 games, and he said "yeah and it would kill them too" - clueless guy.
I started checking a few things on the pc, ie graphics card, hard-drive space, ram and other stuff. took me 30 seconds and a bit of command prompt fun - he said to me "you were pulling my leg, you knew all the answers to those questions didnt you?" I said "yes, and because you didnt you have just lost a customer" (i wouldnt have spent $6K on a laptop anyway with all the things I wanted for it, to its defence it was an alright laptop, just extremely overpriced and didnt offer DX11) +1 for the consumer
My girlfriend just rolled her eyes and said "lets go to the petshop I want to look at the puppies"

But, if everyone out there knew everything, then tech support people would be out of work.

Of course, I shudder at some people getting the idea they can open a computer case and fix things.

You dont need to be tech support to do a good job especially selling something, if you know some basic background stuff for people who like knowing a bit more technical stuff ie how and why 64-bit architecture can utilise more than 3.5GB of ram, what direct X 11 is and why it will improve graphics quality.
Some people - if they are intelligent, they can open a case and actively muck around with computer peripherals, that's how I learnt - built my first computer when I was 12
got the motherboard manual and started from there after I bought all the parts.
i still remember it. Pentium 4 1.8Ghz - 256mb of ram, 40GB IDE hard drive, Nvidia 32mb AGP graphics card. It was the best. and Then I found a pc on the street and I started cannibalising parts from that. I got myself a second CD/RW drive and a 16GB hard-drive out of that. so long ago, was alot of fun.
I agree its a learning curve and you need someone there to instruct you or help you if you did something wrong. My uncle is a professor in Computer engineering at the university 100Km away, I used to ring him when I really screwed up. But that was how I started learning.

All of them fall for it.

All those that made it into the clip that is ;)

If I'd been asked, I would have just raised my eyebrows and smirked at thier little joke. Then again, I know the difference. It's easy to see how others could be fooled though.

You dont need to be tech support to do a good job especially selling something,

The sad fact is that a lot of people selling tech equipment really have no clue. They have a good spiel, but often just can't back up that spiel with a proper explanation.

Its kind of like a car salesmen. It takes a soulless body to do it, more particularly; no conscience. Its sad that these people at big retail stores sell these POS machines at high prices when some of them might know its a bad product. Sad.

I used to do a marketing job at the start of this year before I got my employment in IT.
It is a hard job, I didnt sell PC's (because I couldnt justify the price to people buying a dell) But I hate seeing those advertisements offering duo-core instead of core2 duo (consumers - alot of them do not know the difference and think they are getting something good) I went into a store just last week where a corei7 920 just got sold to some poor bloke for $565AU ($520US), I almost cried for him. I detest the overpriced nature of the market, the mark-upped prices and the preying on the consumer. Noone should have to pay $4000 for something that is worth $1800. The reason why the price hikes in brand name computers occur is the warranty that they offer - you expect your warranty to mean something more than a yum-cha store where you built it yourself. If something goes wrong, they should fix it asap. In reality HP, Dell etc all the pc brands have problems, does it justify a price hike for a one year warranty? I dont know if it does - because pc's should last for more than one year.

I recently looked at buying an ebook.

Ouch.

Linux OS is on all of them, which has folders, but the ebook doesn't have folders.

I am going to wait until ebooks have 21st century standards.

I can say that I'm happy I have a good warranty on my HP laptop; without it I'd be in a rather uncomfortable spot. It's not what I would have picked, but considering it was a present...
